DEAF 4 ‘05
Dublin Electronic Arts Festival 2005
Thursday 25th – Monday 31st October 2005
Sponsored by Tiger Beer
The October Bank Holiday is almost upon us and that means the return of DEAF.
For the fourth year running, DEAF (Dublin Electronic Arts Festival) will take over the city centre’s music venues, clubs, bars and galleries, offering up more than 150 artists spread over 40 events – mixing live electronic music and visual performances, DJ sets, digital exhibitions and workshops.
DEAF was established in 2001 in order to provide a platform for Irish artists working in the electronic arts to showcase their work to Dubliners in the company of their international peers. The name DEAF has become synonymous with quality production, stylish execution, and originality in programming, concept and design. By carving out its own niche, DEAF has come to occupy and indeed define that fertile meeting point in the electronic arts between popular culture and artistic experiment.
We at DEAF recognise that opportunities for artistic expression are infinitely enhanced through technological development and through experimentation. But we also know that Art can be entertaining – just as Entertainment can be artistically stimulating. Hence as ever, we have strived to put together a programme of events that balances the two.
Highlights to watch out for include:
Underground Resistance / Galaxy 2 Galaxy Live [US] (The Village – Sunday Oct 30th )
Debut appearance for the Detroit techno innovators, who will appear as a 7-piece band performing their hi-tech jazz absolutely LIVE.
Pamelia Kurstin [US] (DEAF @ Filmbase - Saturday Oct 29th)
A unique performance by the world’s leading Theremin player. The 'grandfather of synthesizers', invented in 1919 by a Russian physicist, is played without physical contact and can sound similar to the dreamy singing saw. Kurstin has toured and recorded with David Byrne (of Talking Heads) amongst many others and she is currently working on an album for renonwned New York experimentalist John Zorn.
Roger Doyle & General Practice [IRL] (DEAF @ Filmbase – Saturday Oct 29th)
The 'Godfather' of Irish electronic music, veteran electronic composer Roger Doyle teams up with musicians at the cutting edge of laptop and acoustic improvisation.
Lisle Ellis [Canada] (DEAF @ Filmbase - Saturday Oct 29th)
Jazz improvisation mixed with electronics from an expert bass player and genuine free spirit.
Kool Keith [US] (The Village – Thursday Oct 27th)
The long-awaited debut appearance in Ireland of modern rap legend Kool Keith aka Dr. Octagon, backed by his DJ Kutmast Kurt.
Goldie [UK] (Traffic – Sunday Oct 30th)
The drum n bass originator performs in the intimate setting of Traffic, with the latest signing to his Metalheadz label Irish producer Beta 2 in support.
