well, today my premium for life assurance for a mortgage was increased (from the initial quote) based on my BMI.
Beacuse I lived outside the country for a number of years, I had to do a medical, and this is what they came up with.
I am overweight, mostly in the abdominal area, but I think I have a lot of lean muscle mass too.
Really pissed off that underwriters can use such a flawed method
i wouldn't know about legal issues such as that mate. but, if you are carrying excess abdominal fat, your body fat is likely to be high too.now everyone is different but as a general rule men tend to caary excess weight on their stomachs, women on thier hips and thighs.
still, you can use it as motivation to get it down for next years premium
BMI in use today is based on somatatyping, i.e. the 3 body types, endomorph, mesomorph, ectomorph. this system was devised by the acient greeks, and their ideas on the ideal body type.
today it makes no practical sence, due to changes in our bodys due to evolution, diet, lifespan ,lifestyle. it has been inother words rendered useless.
the pinch sites on a body caliper test are ok if used in at least 10 points. not the standard 4 that our doctors use.
bio impedance or electric conductivity test is also HIGHLY inaccurate due to its dependance on water ion the body. take a piss, have a coffee or some vit c, or anything that is a duretic, will mess up the results. women using this method should know that their cycle will greatly vary the readings of this method.
the only true way is the floatation tank, and i think the only one in the country is in u.l.
i was once told i was morbidly ob.....{i just cant say it} by the 4 point caliper test, and believe me, im not.
tell them stuff their test, and the n.c.h.e.s., the itc, itec and most certifing training collages back up what i said above in their texts.
actually, i just quoted Dr Sharkey, of the n.c.h.e.s.,one of the countrys leading neuromuscular {n.m.t.} lecturers.
