Smile Hippies in Fitzgerald Park

Calling all Cork Hippies & Rock 'n Rollers!
Flower Power Day Concert
in Fitzgerald Park
Launched by our
Lord Mayor of Cork
Cllr Chris O' Leary
Sunday, August 9th next at 3pm

On Sunday, August 9th 2015 next from 3-5pm the picturesque Fitzgerald Park will echo with the sounds of the 60s when it stages Flower Power Day. This unique fun-filled free family concert, performed by the very popular Cork Rokk Choir and conducted by Deirdre Moriarty, will celebrate the spirit of the magical rainbow days of the '60s & Rock n' Roll in Cork City.

On the day, you will hear a wide range of songs from the 60s performed with special guests as well as brand new songs from the Choir's upcoming album: Hippies in Fitzgerald Park, written and composed by Richard T. Cooke. Inspired from real life experiences, these fresh new songs epitomise the spirit of the Hippie Days in Cork City when, as the song goes: 'life was fab and we all smoked the peace pipe of love'. They paint a romantic care-free picture of happy, fun times of innocence spent in the dance halls - St. Francis Hall, the Arcadia and the Majorca- the Holy Trinity Hotspots, dancing along with the Showbands, the rock groups and the beat groups to the soundtrack of the Beatles, Donovan, the Beach Boys, the Mamas & the Papas, the Rolling Stones and many more.

And when ladies choice came round, they'd be an Olympic sprint to the jacks, for fear any of the guys wouldn't be picked by the auld dolls. And the most important thing for the guys - the Teddy boys, was a comb in the top front pocket to style their greasy Brylcream hair. And dressing up like the Fab Four - with their long hair and Periwinkles boots, all the guys looked handsome. And the girls - the Birds, with their beehive hairdos and colourful miniskirts - every Bird had a fine pair of legs - they were all 'lashers' and smelt like a rose garden in mid July. And the goal of the night was to get a 'shift' . If you got 'a shift', it would be ninety. And after walking her home, if you got a stall, you were in la la land for the whole week!

So, why not come along and join in the Hippie fun in Fitzgerald Park - put flowers in your hair and put on your periwinkles and blue suede shoes - it's going to be a feast of '60s music and song for all the family.

Here's a flavour of the upcoming Flower Power Day Concert in Fitzgerald Park on Youtube:

Special Guests on the day:
Cork Showband Legend: Declan Ryan, who played with the very popular Jack Brierly Band, the Regal
and the Arrivals Showbands will be performing his 60s Chart topping hit: 'I Need You' and many more.
