On this 75th anniversary of D Day we honour one Irish veteran who tells us how he personally stormed the beaches of Normandy

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the D Day landings, where thousands died so that their grandkids could use that victory to justify why they rang the police when KFC ran out of chicken

War is bad but certainly very necessary sonetimes.

In terms of toughening up youngsters a form of "national service" would be a fantastic idea.

It will reinforce young peoples loyalty and sense of nationalism.

Aslo in term of the two way integration of migrant kids , it could really help in cementing their identity as proper irish people.

National service would give a corps of young able bodied people who could be used for a variety of projects in the national intetest.

Anyway yes, some great documentaries and films about it. Keep the recommendations coming. Brave men is an understatement. Many of them in their teens. Hard to comprehend really.
Average age of American GIs in Viet Nam was 19, so there must have been a huge number of teens in that too. Thing about many teenage boys/men is that they're full of testosterone, aggressive, up for most things, think they're indestructible, more likely to follow orders, and less risk averse.

When men get to their mid-20s and 30s they become more cynical and questioning.

Got to admire all the Irishmen, and women, from the south who didn't have to go but for one reason or another joined the british and fought against what must have seemed in 40 and 41 like overwhelming odds

I loved Max Hastingd D-Day book.

Also Peagasus Bridge is a great read.
Max Hastings book on D-Day and the battle for Normandy was probably the best book that was ever written on the subject he told the truth and nothing but the truth . And provided proof what fearsome and fearless fighters the German soldiers were and yet these same German soldiers who fought in Normandy would not have lasted long with the Russians

On another note does Max Hastings have German ancestory

Yes. I remember how the Viet Nam war pulled the country together.

So tell me. How did the draft work out for you in Ireland?

Im talking about a national service and not a conscripted war.

Nearest the national service corps will come to war is armed stints on homeland security duty.

While America has rarely been without a war, we had a peacetime draft for decades. And in the States, the military can’t do civilian police work in any case.
