noel cantwell passed away this morning
another cork red legend
The captain on United's 1963 FA Cup winning side, has passed away this morning aged 73. He had been poorly for a while. Cantwell was a cornerstone of Busby's rebuilding work after Munich.
As a skipper, his wisdom and experience and motivational skills were so evident that many thought he would succeed Sir Matt.
Wanting to be his own man, Cantwell left Old Trafford after 144 appearances in 1967 to manage Coventry. Cork born, he also managed the Republic of Ireland with whom he had made 36 caps. He also represented his country at cricket.
Noel Cantwell 28.2.1932 - 8.9.2005.

The word legend is often mis-used.
Not in this case. He was a legend.
RIP Noel Cantwell

Noel cantwell was also at west ham and he was a major influence on young players like bobby moore and geoff hurst at the time...True legend. First united captain to win a trophy in the post munich era.
