Una & The Balkan Bears
is a collaboration of Cork born artist Una Palliser with some of Eastern Europe’s most virtuosic musicians.
Violist, violinist and singer Una has had a unique and exciting career to date, equally comfortable playing world, pop and trad music as she is classical. She trained at the Cork School of Music
and Royal Academy of Music in London, but has spent the last few years playing and touring with a diverse range of artists including Moby, Gnarls Barkley, Bueno Vista Social Club, Maxim Vengerov, Elbow and The Killers.
She has performed on US TV show Conan O’Brien, BBC’s Jonathan Ross, Later with Jools Holland and at Wembley Stadium.
Her career has included an invite by Take That
to join them as their featured violist on a world arena tour, her love of Irish singing led her to record her arrangement of ‘Mo Ghile Mear’
for the Specsavers ‘sheep’ advert
, and her passion for Balkan music led her to Slovenia where she has had a number 1 radio hit as guest singer with band Terrafolk
and performed on RTV Slovenia. She also appears on a number of film soundtracks including Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lovely Bones’
It was during her time in Slovenia that Una began her collaboration with The Balkan Bears, made up of Eastern Europe’s most highly esteemed and in-demand musicians. She first encountered BBC World Music Award winner Bostjan Gombac and Janez Dovc
in the Famous Spiegeltent at the Edinburgh Festival where they had just won a Spirit of the Fringe award with their former band Terrafolk. Extraordinary multi-instrumentalist Bostjan who plays clarinet, the musical saw, bodhran, ocarina and a selection of whistles in the band, has performed with the Dubliners and won critical acclaim for his actor/musician starring role in Patty Diphusa and Solistika. He has been touring and performing with accordion player and prolific composer Janez Dovc
for the last few years. They later teamed up with Croatian bass player and singer Goran Rukavina
and eventually Una and the Balkan Bears
were formed, 'a musical treat of tuneful tunes, sassy songs, Balkan rhythms and Irish charm...'
