As the season finishes, even the biggest Keanite could now not admit that gerrard has surpassed him. About 4 years ago, when Keane was at his peak, Gerrard was at least breaking even. However he has moved his game up a notch since then. I would argue that eh can do everything keane could and then add a range of passing and crucial goals to that.
Probably the best striker of a ball in England too.
4 years ago they were comparable but now there is no point. Keane was a defensive mid and Gerrard has turned into an attacking mid. The only thing left to compare them on is their leadership qualities. Gerrard is nearly there but still has a bit to go IMO.

As an athelete keano is second to no footballer, but he would admit that he is not the most gifted footballer, there are a few things to consider however, one of them being the player that keane had around him in his hayday..... giggs, scholes et al were no match for the present day gerrard teamates?

Gerrard has gotten the better of Keane on a number of occassions when Keane was at his peak and Gerrard was still a youngster learning his craft but many pro-keane fans have conveniently airbrushed this from their memory. Only Vieira consistently got the better of Gerrard in his early years.

antonio conte in arena last week gave a little idea of the esteem in which keane is held in the european game, he compared him to didier deschamps, and in no way did he do so to belittle him. he described him as a midfielder who picked up pieces held a team's shape together, made tackles. dunphy tried to put a positive spin on this by claiming that this role is just as difficlut to fill as being a top striker or creative player. i personally completely disagree.

That would carry a lot more weight if Conte wasn't the biggest bluffer in recent Italian footie history. On the plus side he might know a hod carrier when he sees one! I remember a certain Z Zidane saying that Royston was the best he'd ever faced.
Anyhoo, I'd love to crow triumphantly about Gerrard putting the ghost of Keane to rest but the change in position for Gerrard has made it impossible. That talent bit is besides the point. It's not what you could do but what you actually do that you are judged upon.
