Default Salary Cap in premiership

Wigan chairman Dave Whelen has gone on record as saying the premiership will be ruined unless a salary cap is introduced. I know he is probably just trying to level the playing field between Wigan and the likes of Chelsea but I think it would be a good thing. We might even get a more competetive premiership, would ye all be for or against?

I'd definitely be in favour of it.

Something needs to be done to restore a bit of competitiveness to the premiership.

Maybe introduce a transfer cap as well, ie only so much money allowed to be spent on transfers every season.

Rio "Its nice in madrid this time of year isnt it"

every association in the world would have to bring it in , wouldnt they?

I'm not sure how keen My Whelan would be if he was told that he had to enforce a salary cap on his workforce which would likely result in him having to leave some of his best, hard-working management staff join a foreign rival (as per Teknique's point below)??

It's great in theory but would be close to impossible to enforce given the current level of investment in prem. clubs.

The Aussie soccer system is good though. There's a salary cap for all your squad (except one player) and you can pay that one player a (relatively) huge amount. I think Sydney have Yorke as their one "flash" player. Some journos are pushing for a similar thing in the Eircom League.

In an ideal world there would be a transfer cap, say £15 million a year per club, and a salary cap. The fact is that football is too huge and would be impossible to implememnt with all the football associations in the world. Its easy for the like of the NFL to implement this.
The matter of free trade also causes a major problem.

I'm in favour of it though even though it could never happen.

i think i heard that salray capping breaks some eu regulation also.

but if it could be implemented it would be very benificial to football. we would then see if mourinho, fergie et al really earn their corn

Maybe a salary cap is out of the question alright, but surely a transfer cap or maybe a limit on squad size would help reduce the advantage of the rich clubs.

That's true actually forgot about that. Does that have a limit on size though?
