Default Tesco agus an teanga

A campaign to encourage Tesco Ireland to provide a bilingual option on their self-service checkouts has gathered considerable support on the internet.

The campaign started by those behind the Irish language club night at the Roundy in Cork, supported by the PeoplesRepublicOfCor k.com, already has hundreds of Facebook fans and a letter writing and email campaign has just commenced.

It is believed that Tesco are considering the move as the number of people contacting the company has attracted the attention of senior management.

A similar campaign in 2008 resulted in the installation of a Welsh option at checkouts at over seventy branches across Wales so it is believed the same software can be used for an Irish version without significant additional costs.

A spokesperson for the campaign said ”this would be a very small but highly significant victory for Irish as it contributes to the normalisation of it in everyday life and allows people to engage with the language.”

”We approached Tesco because they are the only major supermarket with Irish signage in their stores and would be most likely to adopt our suggestion.

If implemented we hope the initiative will encourage more people to take classes and try speaking the language with friends and family, not just at school or college, but in every day places where they work or socialise.”

Arra, in ainm Diúcs, cad chuige an praeitseáil i mBéarla ar an ábhar seo. Muna bhfuil ar bhur gcumas tcht. a scríobh i nGaelainn canathaobh go gcreideann sibh go bhfuil dualgas ar Tesco seirbhís a chuir ar fáil sa teanga chéanna.

Cé difear a dhéanfadh sé do staid na teangan sa chathair. Tá an teanga marbh marbhánta -sin a bhfuil de.

Tá an ceart agat, a chara. Nuair a d'fhoilsíodh alt faoin fheactas seo i bhFoinse agus ar cúpla suíomh ghaeilge fuaireamar thart 5 cairde breise ar an leathanach Facebook.

Nuair a sheoladh an preaseisúint seo thuas i mbéarla chuig na nuachtain aitúil bhí thart 80 cairde nua againn an lá tar éis sin.

Caithfidh mé a rá nach thuigim 100% d'fhreagair mar is foghlaimeoir mé (níl brón orm faoi sin) ach tuigim go bhfuil tú "míshásta" go bhfuil an alt sin as ghaeilge agus feachtas chun an teanga a chur chun cinn atá againn.

Níl sé easca argóint in aghaidh do thuairm maidir leis an teanga agus é marbh. I mo thuairm tá sé ar 'life-support machine' mar caithtear é a fhoghlaim ar scoil fós agus tá roinnt coircal comhrá agus Club DP ar súil ó am go ham.

Tá rogha ag gach duine, a chara. É a chur chun cinn tríd an modh is fearr leat NÓ caith do lámh in airde agus rud ar bith a dhéanamh.

Roghnaigh mé an feachtas le Tesco mar meascán don mothuchán seo agus píosa craic (caithfidh mé a rá fresin nach thaitníonn an blas Sasanach atá ag na checkouts faoi lathair). Is ceantar béarla é Corcaigh mar sin caithfimid béarla a usáid chun an focal faoin fheachtas seo a scaipeadh. Go minic léirím nuacht as ghaeilge ach chailltear roinnt do sonraí na scéalta mar nílim liofa.

Deir an Stráitéis 20 bliain go gcaithfear níos mó 'normalistation' a fheicéail ar fud na tíre go hairithe taobh amuigh do na ghaeltachtaí.

Cosúil le 50,000 duine gach lá a usáideann na self-service checkouts i dTesco. Da mbeadh rogha ghaeilge ann seans go bhfuil fiu 0.1% don na custaiméirí (500) ag smaoineamh faoi ranganna nó rud eile a dhéanamh maidir lena chuid ghaeilge. Ba fhógra saor in aisce é don teanga chomh maith.

Chuir mé scáirt ar Tesco chun mo tacaíocht a leiriú don feachtas.

Default Dea-scéal

1) Tá siad ag fáil rogha Gaeilge ar na gcúntóirí féin-seirbhís (nuair a tá uasdátú ginearálta a dhéanamh orthu so seans go dtógfaidh sé tamaill mhaith- ach tá siad ag fáil an rogha!)

2) Tá sé mar pholasaí lárnach anois acu chun go mbeadh na comharthaí nó príomh comharthaí ar aon nós ar na haisles a bheith dátheangach leis an Gaeilge scríofta chomh mór ná an Bhéarla! Tá na comharthaí dátheangacha seo i 24 ollmhargaidh acu faoi láthair agus bheidh siad i ngach ceann nuair a tá siad ag fáil uasdátú.

Dea-scéal amach is amach é!
