Seriously google their lyrics, tis toe curlingly embarassing.

Man I really don't get where the hatred is coming from there.
I really like the album.
The instrumentation and production are great and the band are savage live.

And I love seeing an Irish band being nominated for the Mercury Prize.
Where's the Love Dan?

They are indeed savage live, and while I missed them at the Picnic, I saw them way back at probably their first Cyprus Avenue gig, supporting Neil Young at the O2, and at Harmonic at the Marquee. Each time, a fantastic live performance. They are very good live and getting tighter and better each time.

No, not the best Irish band ever or anything, but quite good.

It amazes me when an Irish band gets a lot of press and some fame the "Proc Knockers" start banging their drums. It's like, as soon as a bit of popularity & fame comes along - youre automatically shit. It's almost like, it's uncool to like a popular band.

Villagers may not sell out the Savoy, but they will easily get over a thousand in there, and it's good(and no accident) that prices were kept low @ 18.50

Think the reason they are so tight live is that they all play/played in Cathy Daveys band for the last few years. Although they aren't really my cup of tea I don't think they are that bad either maybe bland but not bad. Will they pull in a thousand people in cork though?I know they were on early in the marquee is this the reason the crowd to see them was small enough?

You were obviously sat as different gig to me then, they were shit and well just incredibly dull.

This isn't a post-fame reaction I just find them intensely dreary and their lyrics are frankly embarassing. But hey tis all subjective, I'm only offering MY take on them.

If you like them and their thang, then more power to you.

i'm still on the fence about them, not having seen them live yet
but one thing i'll say, my 7-year old hasn't read any of the glowing english press they've had, nor is she aware of the mercury prize, but she's been singing "i'll be your fever" after hearing it once on the radio
the lad has written a few catchy tunes at least
