load of corporate bollix or prestigious international sporting event?
When's it on again? I've no interest in it really. I know Tom Humphreys doesn't have much time for it. It's an event I suppose and there's no harm in it as such but you are going to get the usual mob of hyperbole merchants getting themselves all moist at the prospect of whatever is the sporting occasion du jours same as they did for the ERC final, same as they do with the Dubs in the football...
I'll be pleased if there are one or two Irish fellows on the side who do well. Outside that, I've got an All-Ireland ticket to source and the Celtic League is starting up again soon so...

I think this is massively overhyped, look at that AIB advert on TV FFS, Most of Europe dont know its on, talking to a few french lads the other day and they thought it was Tennis

as a sporting event it can make for great viewing especially if the americans turn up this year and put it up to the europeans.
its everything else that surrounds it thats annoying - as you said POL the corporate bollix,i knew people who have never swung a club in anger who are desperately trying to get their hands on tickets and willing to pay stupid money just to tell people they are going and afterwards to say they were there.

It is well over hyped but still a great comptition in my eyes. Its great to see the pro's playing as part of the team. I have my 3 days holidays from work booked anyway. Will watch it all on TV.

The ad fairly nauseating and overblown alright but then, that's ads for you. The Guinness hurling add with the lads turning into pig-warriors was utterly over the top too. It's the function of advertising to create a buzz. That doesn't make it any less annoying though. The disingenuous cant with respect to viewing figures is just plain silly.

yeah, was thinking that meself. i've not much interest in it, i'll keep an eye for the result, but its not a sport i can relate to.
It's as much a piece of corporate bollix as most other large sporting events e.g. the Premiership. You can level that accusation against it if you want, but you'd be struggling to find a sport without at least some deal of corporate involvement. Even the GAA, although it still has the ethos of old, is becoming more and more commercialised; see 'The Croke Park Experience' i.e. the place taken over with big screens, advertising, blaring ads on the speakers at intervals, corporate boxes etc. Anyway, aren't our own government milking the whole thing for any cent of tourism revenue they can get from the thing?
Tom Humphries wrote about the whole Ryder Cup phenomenon in his book a few years back. He, like me, basically couldn't give a fiddlers about any sporting entity called 'Europe'. He said he liked some of the American players better, some of the European, but when it came to US vs Europe, he couldn't care less. Europe is a continent, not a political entity. I am no more European than I'm American.
I hope the Irish players, whichever of them make it onto the team, do well.
