Presidential runner-up Peter Casey has said he wouldn’t mind if any of his children fell in love with a traveller and wanted to marry them.

And he has also revealed that he is “looking” at taking Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to court as the 39 year-old “thunderous disgrace” has allegedly “libelled” him.

Other revelations in an explosive new Hot Press interview include the Co Derry man’s view that a referendum should be held on the legalisation of marijuana.

The 61 year-old, who saw his support surge from 2% to more than 23% during his campaign, said he believes Travellers “overreacted” after his controversial remarks that they are not an ethnic minority.

Mr Casey insisted he would have no problem if one of his adult children came home and told him they loved a traveller and they wanted to marry that person.

“Of course not! I will have absolutely no say in who my children fall in love with and they marry. I will give my children the love and support – and if they fall in love with a traveller and they’re happy and the traveller they fall in love with, whether it be a man or a woman, treats them with love and respect then I’d have absolutely no problem whatsoever,” he said.

And responding to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, who famously called on people not to vote for him, the Dragons Den TV star claimed the Fine Gael leader “knows” he is not racist.

Old people can work? Is that your point? We should work old people to death with no cut off point. That's your semantic victory?

Lol

And your next logical deduction is because we didn't penalise people for deliberately refusing work in the past and I and others think that should change in the future then it's ok to penalise those past the working age for their inactivity in the past even though they are already on the minimum benefits?

Your semantics argument is a load of cock m8.

lol - you've had a good break there. Long enough to get from your work computer to home and have a spot of grub before diving back in again
