Well, just checked site there, its not at 39601 fires as your sources claimed, it's at 76'720 fires in Brazil, link:

So yeah, figures in article you mentioned are nearly half the actual. Your 'credible' sources were nearly 100% off!

So, redoing that math, it's even more ridculous to claim the average size of fire is only 0.13 sq km. It's laughable.

Taking the number of fires as you stated, each fire is burning circa 8 sq km?
The Guardian link actually said 72k fires
