Default Akira

Watched this on DVD last night.

A Japanese manga film from the 1980s and undoubtedly worth watching.

The blurb on the box says that without Akira, The Matrix couldn't have happened and it's hard to watch it without thinking of The Matrix.

The plotlines are different, we certainly don't have humans living in a machine-controlled grid, but some scenes from The Matrix are lifted almost directly. What's more, some of the characters and some of the metaphysical imagery are almost identical.

And now for where it falls down... In the first half of the film, the plotline can be a little difficult to follow and the principal characters don't seem to become the most important for a while into it. It could perhaps have done with being 20-30 minutes longer to allow for the slower development of both plot and character. Of course, in an animated film, this is prohibitively expensive and that is probably why it didn't happen.

Overall, an excellent film that is definitely worth getting out. In fact, possibly the best animated film I've seen.

Must look it up.
I'm off to the Ghibli museum in a few weeks to get a Miyazaki fix. Woohoo!
