Default Kerekes Band from Hungary

The Kerekes Band from Eger in Hungary have been given air tickets by their Government to fly to Cork for a short 7 day tour.

The Hungarian Government chose Ireland due to the similiarity of Hungarian & Celtic traditional music and they chose Cork due to it's present 'Capital of Culture status'. Kerekes' home town, Eger, is in the hat to wear the Capital of Culture crown in 2010 along with Budapest, Dabrecen, Gyõr, Miskolc, Pécs and Sopron. The Hungarian Government will name their nominee in October.

Kerekes tour will take in:
The Venue, Clonakilty 7th October
Trinity Rooms, Limerick 8th October
The Curragh Kildare 9th October (afternoon)
An Cruiscin Lan Cork 9th October (evening)
The View RTE1 11th October
Trinity Rooms Limerick, 12th October
Crawdaddy, The Pod, Dublin 13th October

Kerekes Band was formed in 1995 in Hungary where they became a well-known group in dance-houses performing folk and dance music from Moldova (a special mixture of Hungarian, Romanian, Serbian and Turkish folk music)

The Kerekes have had a regular dance-house in Eger since 1997.

The band started to play authentic folk music from Gyimes and Moldova and became Young Masters of Folk Art in 1998 (Awarded by the Ministry of National Cultural Heritage)

Kerekes have since discovered, accepted and adopted the effects of other contemporary music genres. In this way Kerekes could create a brand new free-style perfomance of this basically lively folk music. They've found their own unique sound which might be called world-music but, as it keeps the rhythm and completeness of folk music, is still different.

its a wine town for sure - lots of vineyards and cellars. i cant remember the hungarian name but bulls blood is a fairly well known and very good wine that comes from there. really cheap too. didnt try the beer.

for a small town there seemed to be loads of stuff going on culturally. the place has a good central office with lots of info in many languages on events happening... and this is 5 or so years before the Capital of culture thing MIGHT happen.

how long did it take for cork to set up a central info office for 2005 - 6 months? grrr...

When I say hooch I mean anything over 38% ABV, you know Hungarian whiskey or moonshine maybe, I can't really ask em to bring me a case of wine but a couple of bottles of rocket fuel might warm the cockles through a long winter

perhaps the Hungarians are coming to spy on us, to learn by our mistakes and see how not to do it.

Judging by the info on that website it sure looks like it's got a decent bit-a-culture already

In answer to the hooch question I got this reply by email from one of the members of Kerekes Band this morning:

The Hungarian local alcohol is Palinka (HUNGARICUM!!!): made from
different fruit: peach, plum (the most favourite), pear...You can't make it at home (can't ))... yes, you can!!!) but you pick the
plum from your trees and you go to the distillery (you pay a lot of money)
and you got your own 40 % (or it can be 50 %) pálinka... For example: my
grandparents live in a small (400 person) village: Fedémes, where we have
a a lot of plum trees... so we have our own Fedémesi Pálinka! You will
taste it at Cork... it's like a "horse-kick" But Eger is famous from other alcohol: the Wine!
From very dry to sweet: white and red... The most famous Hungarian wine is
the Egri Bikavér (Eger Bullsblood): a very dry red wine! My favorite is
the Medina (a sweet one) - Medina is also name one of a Kerekes Band song!
Zsombor

There's culture for you

I'll have 2 bottles of the 50% please!

Ah..... my Palinka and Bulls blood has been secured so I am informed, and don't ask cos you ain't gettin any.

So I'm all set for some solo Palinka guzzling next week whilst Zsombor and his pals test the waters of the local stout, beer not being big in Eger.

I wonder if they have Palinka louts in Hungary! you might see one (or two if I'm feeling generous) on Pana come monday night.

*bump*
