Default Plan for new 5,000-seat arena in Cork

From the Echo today:

A global leader in the music industry has revealed talks are underway to develop a new concert venue in Cork.

Live Nation, the music promoters behind the O2 venue in Dublin, said talks are ongoing to secure a 5,000-capacity arena in Cork.

Mike Adamson, chief executive of Live Nation Ireland and chief executive of the O2 arena, said that discussions were taking place with developers about the project.

He said that the company hoped to build a venue with capacity for up to 5,000 people.

could be good for the local economy a 5000 capacity venue will be able to attract and presumebly sell out the same type of bands as the o2 attracts

it would at best pull 25/30 bands a year

it would end up being used for bridal fairs, business seminars etc

as an economic crutch it would be positive, it would create a few hundred jobs short term and maybe 100/200 or so once it's finished. that's all good

but Vicar St sized would be way better than 02 sized

it should be a condition of the planning that there's 10-20 affordable band/theatre rehearsal rooms built as part of the overall complex too, that way local bands might develop as a consequence.

Live Nation/Aikens/MCD, etc don't give a flying fuck about cork in the long term (i can see all the profits being repatriated to dublin and/or wherever live nation are based) so it's up to the council to build in conditions that might see some cork bands benefit in some small way.

The tiny amount of cork acts who've gotten support slots at the marquee is an indication of how little these organisations care about what happens down here.

will declare a vested interest and say I hope that doesn't happen.

also indicates how many few bands Cork produces that are worth a slot of such a nature. There were few bands coming down from Dublin to do the slots either

What utter bullshit ronan!
you show complete lack of any understanding of the mechanism that is the Marquee or the running of an agency such as Aikens with such a sweeping statement.Jim Had it right first time!
There are plenty bands in cork able to support acts in the Marquee,(that is far from the point)but Aiken have bigger things to worry about than keeping these local bands happy(of whom they are not even aware).
one occasion when they did - both fred & the franks went over their time, which could have breached their contract with Damien and cost them a fortune !
its so much easier to trow a dj on,or not even!
they expect the headliner to bring a support and sometimes they don't even know until the day of the show - I have had to provide a support act to show-up at 2hours notice.
Also the artist who brings their own production(most of them this year) hasn't prepared for an outside act to slot-in, as they are not part of their production, and they are certainly not gonna let them share channels/mixes/etc!
