Zidane
Ronaldo
Ronaldinho
Cannavaro
Kaka
Rivaldo
Luis Figo
Shevchenko
Sammer
Nedved
Weah
Owen

When I put them in order I ended up with this. Zidane and Ronaldo are pretty secure at 1&2 in my opinion. Ronaldo was robbed of many peak years through injury, where as Ronaldinho has no one to blame but himself post Barca (a bit of a waste truth be told). Cannavaro was amongst the best 5 or so defenders in the world for about a decade and did it at a World Cup which will always help your legacy. Kaka suffers from his later career, while Rivaldo wasted many years playing for shite clubs. Figo is one who could be higher for sure, but in my opinion the defining moment of his career is still a transfer. That cost him spots. Shevchenko was hurt by the Chelsea move and the subsequent years. Nedved was a great player but not sure he was ever the best player on any major club team he played for so hard to put him higher. Sammer along with Ronaldo is the other big ‘what if?’.... the best defender in the world and he managed to win quite a lot for someone who had such a short career. Won a champions league with an underdog, and lead his nation to a national tournament victory which is some going. Finally Weah had a few great years, but he spent a lot of his career at weaker teams, his goals ratio isn’t great, and his teams didn’t win much. That hurt him. And finally Owen is at the bottom. Perhaps if he had gone somewhere instead of Madrid it could have been very different? Obviously the injuries didn’t help anything but even in his prime he wasn’t starting for Real if everyone was fit. The decision to go to Newcastle after that was horrendous and sealed his fate. The trophies at United pad the honors section on the resume too.

Ahh no, he was a phenomenal player in fairness. Equally capable as a sweeper or in midfield. Comfortable on the ball, scored a lot given his role, and a leader too. Would have had an absolutely unreal career if he could have stayed fit. He won a lot of silverware considering he moved a lot. Would be worth a fortune in the modern game in theory, then again he got homesick right after leaving Germany for Inter so he’d probably just be one of the first names on the team sheet for a decade at Bayern Munich if he played now.

Don't think Ronaldo ever won a league? Two world cup medals is hard to argue with though.

Bit before my time but 4 goals in 11 games at Inter (Wiki) is not bad at all for someone struggling to settle.

This is a list of every player who won the Balon Dor from the year they opened it to non European players until the Cristiano Ronaldo/Lionel Messi duopoly took over. With the announcement today that Kaka has retired, all of these players are no longer active professionals. My question therefore is, who had the best career? You can go the extra step and put them all in order from best to worst (career). Should make for some good debate.

Zidane for me.
Won 2 C.Ls., one each with with Juve and Real Madrid. Serie A and La Liga. One W.C. and one E.C. with France.
Hard to beat that for a playing career and he didn't play for shite clubs to earn extra money when he was on the wane to be fair to him.
Not doing too badly as a manager either but that's for another debate.
Michael Owen was one of the luckiest Balon D'Or winners it's fair to say. The year he won it was because France Football didn't want to give it to Real Madrid's Raul Gonzalez, who would have been a far more deserving choice.

Zidane only won a Champions League with Real. Never won one with Juventus. In fact his total career haul of 3 league titles and 1 CL is pretty surprising considering his ability and who he played with..... yes, I’m not counting super cups and charity shield type trophies. That said, phenomenal career overall and the World Cup (almost 2) and Euros, and his performances in those tournaments put him right at the pinnacle of the game.

Zidane won the CL with Juve? Only in Lee’s world that is

He was traumatized after he lost 2 finals with Juve (against Dortmund & Madrid) and the move to Madrid gave him a realistic chance to get his hand on the cup with big ears
