It's a great city for a lads weekend away. It's not unlike Amsterdam, but without the drugs.

The Reeperbahn has to be seen to be believed. As well as the whole Red Light District, it has theatres, bars and night clubs. Unlike Amsterdam, it does have street prostitution and if you're walking round the side-streets on the river side of the Reeperbahn, they will come up to you and link arms etc.

The centre is a 15 minute walk away from the Reeperbahn - which is actually the main street in the suburb of St Pauli. The area between the two is a business district that gets quiet after dark, but it seemed safe enough.

The nightlife in the centre is more restrained. That's more the sort of area you'd go to if you were away with the old doll. The restaurants there tend to be better than in St Pauli, but also more expensive.

On three occasions a year, a massive funfair called the Dom sets up in a park in this area. It stays open til midnight on weekends and you could easily kill a few hours there before heading on to the Reeperbahn.

It has a great array of shops and the city just oozes money. Make sure you check out the enormous Saturn electrical store near the Hauptbahnhof.

The one draw back is that it's not very tourist oriented. Most of the bus tours were only in German. The metro has no English explanation of the ticketing system. That said, most Germans can speak pretty good English.

I can't really tell you much about hotels. Sorry.
