Default Ryanair Pilot announcement Cork-Gatwick

I flew into Cork from Gatwick yesterday evening and I had to laugh when the pilot came on and announced that the landing would be a bit bumpy because of the weather. He then went into a spiel about “missed landings” and assured us he would take off again, following protocol, if there was any doubt about the landing and we would be safe at all times. No doubt the famous incident over Bishopstown last summer with Ryanair on his mind and our minds.

In fairness, they did, what seemed to my untrained eye, a text book landing. The plane was being tossed about a lot on approach and there were a few sudden drops in altitude but the landing seemed well under control. Lots of people started clapping when he hit the brakes. Last year I was on a “missed landing” with Aer Lingus in Dubrovnik and it didn’t seem half as windy and we were diverted to Split while Russian planes landed below us in Dubrovnik.

Funny the way he mentioned the missed landing though. They never say too much even if its very bumpy.

Still really impressed with the new terminal. I love the way you can get from the airport front door to the gate in about two minutes. You'd hate to think the place would remain stagnant because of Little Liar Bertie.

Dubrovnik is a notoriously difficult airport to land at. With the mountains on one side ad the sea on the other, it's really susceptible to bad weather. Russian pilots seem to have a slightly different attitude to risk from those in the west

I've had three missed landings at this point. Two with Aer Lingus in Cork and one with Ryanair in Dublin. One was because of low visibility and the other two because of winds.

A missed landing isn't anything like as scary as an aborted take off though. You don't know why the pilot is braking so hard. For all you know, you could be 0.1 seconds away from ploughing into another aircraft. A horrible experience.

Agreed. For a straightforward landing it's embarassing. After the Chinese we seem to be the worst offenders.

It's a long story that is in another thread. The basic story is that Ryanair had a failed landing attempt (not unusual in itself). Then the pilot ignored standard procedure and the advice of the co-pilot and put the plane into a sharp turn. It lost altitude and came below the level that the hill at Cork airport is on. He was damn lucky not to crash the plane.

Maybe but there was a woman praying opposite me, so people perceive it (rightly but in the extreme) as a matter of life and death so I think its just a way of relieving tension. I dont think they're applauding the pilots per se.

There aren't a lot of professions whose major mistakes can cause people to die instantly.
