Punters flock to bookmaker's to play the new stadium name game

Feb 8 2007

Liverpool Daily Post

THE favourite name for Liverpool's new stadium remains Anfield or New Anfield in the eyes of punters at bookmakers' shops across the region.
But William Hill has confirmed it has accepted bets on a huge number of potential sponsors.
It has opened a book on likely names after Liverpool's new owners said they would offer up naming rights if the price was right.
Odds on potential sponsors: 7/1 Carlsberg, 10/1 McDonald's, 14/1 Adidas, 16/1 Budweiser, 33/1 Starbucks, 66/1 Dr Pepper, 66/1 Shankly Stadium, 100/1 Littlewoods, 500/1 G W Bush, Taco Bell, 1000/1 Fowler, Kop Out.
It is also offering 1000/1 on the club changing its name, with suggested names from punters including: The Liverpool Yankees, Liverpool Cowboys, Liverpool Steelers or Liverpool Globetrotters.

"We have had loads of small bets from punters speculating what the new stadium will be called and to date Budweiser is the most requested at 16/1.

"We have also had a few enquires for the team name to be changed and not all were from Liverpool fans, including one betting on Liverpool Loonies," said Hill's spokesman Rupert Adams.

Jinky banner is a cracker. Was at the Dunfermline game when it was unveiled and sat right down at the front of it.

That was at Celtic Park today.

Alex has done his hamstring playing for PSV at the weekend, looks a major doubt for the Liverpool games.

There are also rumours that the talented forward Kone also picked up an injury in that game which may force him out of the first leg.

Rafa Benitez has praised the way in which January signing Alvaro Arbeloa has slotted into the Liverpool side.

Though the Spanish defender has made just one substitute appearance in the Premiership since arriving from Deportivo La Coruna, he started both UEFA Champions League games against Barcelona.

Arbeloa played at left-back in both matches as The Reds booked a quarter-final date with PSV Eindhoven in early April.

Normally at home on the right, or in the centre, the stopper's ability to rise to the challenge has impressed his new boss Benitez.

The Liverpool chief feels Arbeloa has followed the example of Dirk Kuyt, who was quick to establish himself in the team after joining from Feyenoord last summer.

"It's never easy for a new player to settle immediately and it's even more difficult if someone comes from another country and doesn't speak the language," Benitez told the club's official website.

"It is always a sign of qualify if someone can come into the side and play well straight away.

"We saw this earlier in the season with Kuyt, who did well as soon as he joined us.

"Now Arbeloa has joined the club and played at a good level against Barcelona.

"That will help his confidence as he looks to improve even more at Liverpool."
