TD/councillors weren't allowed double job cos they couldn't give full attention to both. only thing for it, is an email campaign to Prendeville.

No way. I'd even vote for them before I'd vote for that paragon of blueshirt wankers amongst blueshirt wankers.

Its all about the economy anyway the next election with Sinn Fein or the looney left capable of screwing it up soon or the F.F. / F.G./ P.D. screwing it up later.

I personally would'nt put Sinn Fein in charge of a car wash.

Fine Gael screwed Cork enough times over the years.......Peter Barry and extended family destroyed Cork in the early 80's.

Margaret Thatcher is the spawn of Satan.......Simon... ..the girls love him.

Double dilemma for MEPs as pledge to serve both parliaments doesn't add up

WHAT will the 11 members of the Oireachtas running for Europe do if they are elected and have to draw salary and expenses of as much as €270,000 for serving both parliaments?

And will they all sign a pledge not to seek re-election to the Dail and finish their five-year term if their bids to serve in Europe are successful?

Candidates are expected to address this deeply traumatising double dilemma as polling day in the upcoming European elections comes closer.

First, follow the money: a TD and an MEP both earn an annual salary of some €85,000 and the average TD clears expenses of a further €50,000, while an MEP's expenses are worth another €50,000.

It wouldn't require a Masters in Sums to work out that the potential annual double salary for a TD/ MEP is €270,000.

However, even the shrewdest double jobbers have yet to master the art of bi-location, although they could, in theory anyway, get attendance money in both the Dublin and Strasbourg parliaments on the same day.

The TDs who could win the double bonus in this electoral lotto are: FF's Eoin Ryan; FG's Gay Mitchell; the Socialist Party's Joe Higgins; FF's junior minister Liam Aylward; FF's Seamus Kirk; FG's Simon Coveney; Labour's Senator Brendan Ryan; FG's Senator Jim Higgins; FG's Madeline Taylor Quinn; Independent TD Marian Harkin; and FF's Dr Jim McDaid. Just as intriguing is the pledge by FF candidates not to run for the Dail and finish their five-year terms there if they are elected to the European parliament.

On Monday, the new decisive Taoiseach said each of the FF candidates would give that pledge in blood, if required.

But it is Fine Gael who have most difficulty honouring a promise to remain in Europe and not run in the next general election.

A Fine Gael spokesman said last night that the two favourites, Dublin TD Gay Mitchell and Cork TD Simon Coveney, would serve a full term in Europe and, therefore, not stand in the next general election.

They could sign that pledge in blood but this reporter will bet they will run for Fine Gael at the next general election if they win their spurs as MEPs.

Agree totally.Unlike our friends in sinn Fein who spent last saturday orchastrating a riot and bringing there sectarian hatred towards an orange march down to the streets of our capital,Coveney is actually working for his country in Europe.Should be a shoe in for a seat in the south central ward in the next election.
