bass Players Form UK Supergroup
In a recent interview with Filter magazine, New Order bassist Peter Hook revealed the details behind the UK's newest pop supergroup, Freebass. The budding collaborative project has Hook teaming up with fellow bassists Andy Rourke (the Smiths) and Mani (Stone Roses) to form a triple-bass rock trio, which is still seeking a lead vocalist.
"It was just one drunken night and I floated the idea. And basically what gave me the most impetus was that everyone laughed," Hook told Filter. "Three bass players on an album—everyone absolutely pissed themselves."
Despite their odd lineup and lack of a vocalist, Freebass have already started working on some original tunes. "All of the songs—and they are songs at the moment minus vocals—they all have three basses. Mani does the low part, Andy Rourke in the middle and I do the high bit. It works out quite well."
When they do find a singer to complement their bass work, Hook suggests that it won't be another veteran pop star. And though it's still unclear where they plan to find a lead singer, Hook gave some ideas: "Every time I see Pop Idol or X-Factor, I chuckle and think maybe we need to do this. [Call it] Miserable Factor. Let’s see who can get the most miserable single!"
