back to back hat tricks vs respectively Valencia and Sarragossa....best player in the world at present, no discussion....Rooney 's probably very close to him, but right now, i'd go for Messi.

No doubt, Rooney is unreal at the moment but Messi is the first person really to threaten Maradona and Pele as the worlds greatest, ever. Cannot wait for the World Cup. Argentina may be in a shambles at the mo, but Messi can singlehandedly win it for them like Maradona did in 86.

Barca were no great shakes tonight. He was the difference, goals from nothing...well the last 2 anyway.

Zidane's up there with the 2 South Americans for me.

As good as Messi is, he's going to have to keep this form for another few years if he is to be considered a football legend.

Was gonna mention Zidane but for some reason left him out. Maybe a bit more of the old passage of time factor will sort that out. Loved Zidane, he was more like Pele in physique and style, and likewise Maradona and Messi.

Cryuff, Platini and Puskus should also get honourable mentions.

just looking back over the thread and alot of people didn't seem to mind him doing the "hand of god" but their was a major outcry why a certain french player did something similar
