Default Fred?

I finally got round to seeing this band last Wednesday night. I read the blog "Like Sly & The Family Stone in a swordfight with the Flaming Lips,
refereed by Brian Wilson", being huge fans of all the above, I went along. This wasn't my first encounter with the band though, two of the girls I live with are always palying both their albums, when I have protested, they constantly tell me how good they are live, that they don't really shine through on to record etc. , etc.

I'd say this band are overrated but thats hardly fair, I mean there still playing the same sized venues in the 2/3 years I have been living here. I am constantly berrated about how good this band ar and they're just not. The are really really mediocre

The blog is completely misleading, the last time I was so disgusted with a bands description was when about 4 years ago I was persuaded into buying a BellX1 album "because their kind of like Radiohead", are they fuck!

I was just wondering what other people think, is it just girls from the age of 17-25 that are into them.

I've been living in Cork about 4 years now and I have weirdly only seen them the once, a tsunami benefit in the Savoy. Personally thought Niall Conolly and his band were better on the night but wouldn't judge them on one performance. I too have loads of friends who swear by them. Any kind of description that throws in a loads of bands is usually a pretty lazy way of describing what the band is up too, maybe its what they imagine they sound like because there their influences. I did hear Flaming Lips comparrisons before, I've been listening to them for years and I can't hear it. Might be more to do with their live show, they're all into making it a fun party type night at their gigs and I know that for the Flaming Lips that really works.

good melodic, well written songs, good energy on stage, one of the few bands that'll always get me up and jumping around at a gig. actually, the only cork band that can do that for me. and to the best of my knowledge, i'm not a seventeen year old girl.

You see, that to me, just sounds liek you know the band or something, not really critical, not really saying they're excellent either. I'm guessing the general consensus is they're good to see live, because on a local level they have the fun loving aspect to their shows, but realistically they will remain local heroes, for ever and ever and ever and ever and ever........

I have always liked fred, especially live as they put on such a good show, however i know lots of people who don't rate them & just see them as a novelty act.
