Don't be so naive. The higher you step up in class, the more you need tactics. That's why United have had such epic fails in Europe. Monaco, Dortmund, Leverkusen, Porto, etc. etc. Did they have better players than United? No, they were just well drilled and better set up to expose United's weaknesses.

How many managers have won the Champions League more than Fergie?

Not too many

And it's hardly all about the money, it's funny that this is suddenly one of the great sticks to beat him with (especially seeing as he won a European trophy with an ordinary unfashionable team in 83)

Real Madrid bought the best in the 50's and for years in this decade too

AC Milan bought the best players from other European clubs and still do

Liverpool didn't pluck Kenny Daglish and John Barnes and co from Melwood

The Champions league is a great tournament in my opinion and it is fairly unique in football these days as noone can retain it or dominate it

Juggling both it and domestic league success is very hard and while Fergie should have won a couple more, it is is fairly retarded to call him clueless anytime his team draw or lose a match

A manager who's team have not lost a competitive match in Europes premier competition for two years is hardly clueless now is he?

How does this fit in with the fact that he won the tournament when the Premier League was ranked a lowly 6th in Europe, and frequently contended the business-end of the tournament at that time? A time when Italian and Spanish clubs were spending vastly more than any English club, and even some of the Bundesliga clubs too?

Just in the interests of balance now, you understand.

League football is about having the best/most consistent/well motivated players over the season. Ferguson and United have very rarley been found wanting in that respect.

The ko stages of the champions league is a tacticians dream. Having good players alone is not enough. It's been proven time and again and it's why United have failed more than they should have.

dan, two of those teams won the tournament. and one got to the final.maybe they were just good teams?

i'm not saying tactics don't have their place. just that the quality of your players is far more important IMO.
