Sometimes yes, though as I said an adult child doesn't have an automatic right to inherit from a parent. Not being named in a will is not a grounds for contesting it.

If the parents die intestate don't the children then have an automatic right to divide up the proceeds Mattie?

Yes, as next of kin. If a parent decides they dont wish their adult child to inherit though, they are entitled to dis-inherit them.
