Mrs. Merton once asked Daniel O'Donnell if he had ever thought of becoming a priest and went on to say that maybe it was the thought of all that sex that deterred him.

As opposed to the sensible non Jesus one? Or is Jesus OK so long as it's a Protestant Jesus?

The main problem with the Catholic Church is the enforcement of celibacy on the priesthood and vows of celibacy on other orders, nuns etc.
This was an economic decision by the Roman Church to prevent dissipation of its possessions due to inheritance of a priests family.
The Great Schism of 1054 separated the Eastern Orthodox Church ,based in Constantinople (Istanbul) from the Rome Based Catholic Church. due to matters of theology and Church politics.
The Catholic Church at the time was a powerful organisation with the capability of securing military power to assert its beliefs, using the Holy Roman Emperor as its spearhead. Charlemagne was the first Emperor and Enforcer.
The vow of celibacy is voluntary in the Orthodox Churches.
The demonization of Russia as an alien force has existed from the time Russia adopted Orthodoxy and has persisted down thru' the centuries, morphing into political differences in the past 2 centuries.
