Post UCC Tradsoc Tradfest, 1st –5th February 2011

UCC Tradsoc are proud to present Cork TRADFEST which takes place this year from 1st - 5th of February. "TradFest" is a fantastic event week long event for both students and the general public of Cork and the surrounding areas. Here the best of Irish musicians from around the country are brought together for a few days of concerts, céilis, sessions and much more.

Wednesday 2nd February

Free Lunchtime Concert: Richard Lucey (Button Accordion) & Ciarán Coughlan (Piano)
Venue: An Seomra Caidreamh, The O’Rahilly Building, UCC
Time: 1.10 pm
Entry: Free

Come along to our special Tradfest Céilí. As with all of our céilís, this one is for everyone: not just accomplished dancers but also beginners and people of every standard in between. The emphasis is on participation and having fun while learning some Irish dances.
Venue: Plato Murphy’s Bar
Music: St. Finbarr’s Céilí Band

Thursday 3rd February

O’ Riada Memorial Lecture
The free annual O’ Riada Memorial lecture.
Venue: O’Riada Hall, UCC Music Department, Sunday’s Well
Time: 6 pm
Title: Fundamentals in Irish Music
Lecturer: Peadar Ó Riada
Admission: Free

Double Bill Concert: Rónán Ó Snódaigh & Ciorras
Fantastic Double Bill concert, the first half of which will feature Rónán Ó Snódaigh. Rónán is the lead vocalist and musician in the musical group Kíla. The second half will feature the exciting new, up-andcoming band, Ciorras. Ciorras were formed earlier this year as a result of the hit TG4 television series “Lorg Lunny” - the quest of renowned Irish musician, Dónal Lunny, to form a band with some of the finest young musicians this country has to offer.
Venue: Cyprus Avenue, Oliver Plunkett Street, Cork.
Time: 8pm for Rónán Ó Snódaigh and 10.30pm for Ciorras
Entry: €10 from 8pm for Rónán Ó Snódaigh and free from 10.30pm for Ciorras.

Friday 4th February

Free Lunchtime Concert: Martin Hayes (fiddle) and Dennis Cahill (guitar)
A free concert in the sophisticated surroundings of the Aula Maxima by renowned and decorated musician Martin Hayes from Clare. His unique sound and his mastery of the fiddle make him one of the most extraordinary talents to emerge from the world of Irish music. He will be accompanied by master guitarist Dennis Cahill from Chicago, USA. Dennis Cahill has performed with many renowned musicians on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Cahill’s spare, essential accompaniment to Martin Hayes’ fiddle is acknowledged as a major breakthrough for guitar in the Irish tradition.

Battle of the Trad Bands
UCC’s national Battle of the Trad Bands competition, featuring a guest performance by new band Deluces Patent. This competition is open to bands from all over the country. A great night of music from some of the newest bands on the Traditional Music Scene is guaranteed.
Venue: Cyprus Avenue, Oliver Plunkett Street, Cork.
Entry: €5
Prizes: €600 and Support Act for Main Gig on Saturday
Time: 9pm

Saturday 5th February

Session Crawl
Free sessions in some of Cork’s Traditional Music Pubs.
Time: 3 pm: An Spailpín Fánac (South Main Street), The Corner House (Coburg Street), An Bodhrán (Oliver Plunkett Street)
Time: 5 pm: The Ovens Tavern (Oliver Plunkett Street), Sin é (Coburg Street), Counihans (Pembroke Street)

Headline Concert: North Cregg
Rooted in the vibrant traditional music of their native County Cork, North Cregg embraces musical influences from around the world to create one of the most distinctive and charismatic voices in Irish music. North Cregg produce some of the freshest and finest sounds to be heard in Irish Music today. The stunning vocals of Claire Anne Lynch mesmerise with beautifully crafted interpretations of contemporary and traditional Irish gems. Accordionist and Master of Ceremonies, Christy Leahy, leads the way with spirited tunes alongside the dazzling fiddle and banjo playing of Liam Flanagan. Groove masters Ciarán Coughlan on swing piano and Martin Leahy, on drums and guitar, create one of the tightest and hottest rhythm sections in Irish music. North Cregg will be supported by the winners of the Battle of the Trad Bands Competition and the night will be rounded off by a Trad Disco with DJ Conor Crimmins.
