Default Cork-Dublin Motorway

Anyone who has to trudge the Cork-Dublin N8 boreen on a weekly basis like myself will be looking at nearby construction works with mouth watering lust from the driving seat. You watch the dumpers and hope one day to see line painters out but week after week it just seems to be more muck lorries and diggers.

The Fermoy direct route is fantastic and shaves a good 15 minutes off a journey to Dumpland and I thank God I never have to sit in traffic again in that bottleneck.

On the NRA website I found schemes for

Portlaoise to Cullahill
Cullahill to Cashel
Cashel to Mitchelstown (described as dual carriageway)

Depressingly none of these are due to be completed until the end of 2009. Somebody with inside information please tell me that this is a PR job and that they’ll be ready sooner! I’m desperate like...

Also, is there any hope of continuing the motorway beyond Fermoy anytime soon? It looks like its set up to continue on but perhaps a forest will grow there by the time its ready to be worked on again.

www.nra.ie if anyone else's interested

by early 2009 (predicted) you will never drive through a small town on your way to dublin. It will nearly all be dualcarrigeway or motorway

there is a full ring road it we are talking about the same,
cork/dublin, about 1km before you get to the town there is a turn off left. Take that and you will go down a forest road, at the end do NOT head back into Abbeyleix, turn left and then first right. follow that road all the way to the far side of abbeyleix (there is one junction almost an X-junction, take the closest road to carrying on straight)

Exactly try doing that trip 10 years ago from Dublin to Cork on a wet Friday evening stuck on the curragh outside Kildare, crawling through Monesterevin knowing the shop/pub names by heart due to boredom.

The trip to Dublin is a doddle now.

I too watch with interest this road activity...or lack of it...but take a step back and think ...we done our bit in Cork, great road to the border...then them lazy-arse tipp folk are no where to be seen..they built 3 bridges over the odd field and thats them done.... doesnt get much better in Kilkenny, shocking really. as the middle section MItchelstown to Abbeyleix takes the longest....

Blame Tipperary Co.Council for pocketing the euro money set aside for the road.
