Absolutely but Klopp isn’t going to do a City and spend a fortune on someone who he definitely can’t guarantee regular game time to so it’s understandable he didn’t fork out when their injury record is good but the risk is clear and could be seen yesterday.

People may point out that Keita is an expensive sub but he is someone Klopp will fit into the team if he can get fit regularly.

It's manageable

Liverpool can get a tier 1 striker and manage this '4 players for 3 positions' situation through smart rotation

This wouldn't necessarily damage the squad harmony

My guess is that Klopp either doesn’t see the value in it or else can’t find a player for it that role. He has entrusted Origi with the job as next man in but he’s mainly good for impact sub role.

Agreed.

We all know about the crucial goals he's got and that's great but he's too inconsistent.

Spurs are almost as bad as United so we can expect them to park the bus as well.

I'd give Robbo explicit instructions to go apeshit down the wing all day and try get in behind.

It opens us up to a counter but frankly Spurs at the moment can barely function up front.

Matip out too

Mohamed Salah returns to the Liverpool squad for Wednesday's Champions League clash with Genk, but Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joel Matip are set to miss out.

Salah takes his place among the 19 travelling players who departed John Lennon Airport on Tuesday afternoon for Belgium after missing Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Manchester United.

However, Alexander-Arnold remains on Merseyside due to a virus, as does Matip, who has a sore knee.

Liverpool squad: Alisson, Fabinho, Van Dijk, Wijnaldum, Lovren, Milner, Keita, Firmino, Mane, Salah, Gomez, Adrian, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana, Brewster, Robertson, Origi, Kelleher.

Back-to-back games against Genk. Both must-win games. The home game is the mid-week before City come to Anfield.

I'd resist overly rotating from the start for this one. Hopefully if Liverpool go ahead and look comfortable you could look to given Keita, Origi and Brewster some minutes.

Alisson

Gomez, Lovren, VVD, Robertson

Ox, Milner, Henderson

Salah, Firmino, Mane

That back 5 and front 3 is absolutely world class. If Liverpool could get a Modric type player in midfield next to the mullackers in there they could be a force for years.

Of course, the danger is Liverpool’s best players are no doubt coveted by Europe’s elite. So, will they pay elite wages or risk doing a spurs?

Not so sure my proposed back 4 above for tonight are world-class, but agree the first-choice back 4 are (...and if Gomez matures as expected he has a higher ceiling level than Matip).

To a degree, Liverpool can underpay relative to the market for a while as players love to play for Klopp and the club are in the hunt for the big trophies.

They've handled it well in the last 12-18 months by being pro-active in handing out regular pay bumps as part of contract extensions.

But there's still a huge gulf between what Liverpool top performers earn compared to:

- Top tier performers & marketing cash cows: Messi and Ronaldo are earning 4-5 times what Salah is.

- Overpaid, overhyped underperformers: Neymar, Pogba, Sanchez, Ozil

Liverpool don't have the same constraints as Spurs (who needed to fund a stadium & don't have the same global appeal) but there may come a time in the next 1-2 seasons where they may take a call to let one of their big names go abroad for huge fee/wages and start growing the next phase of this team.

It would be a mistake to let the front 3 all grow old together. Ideally they'll bring someone in during the summer in the ~20-23 yrs of age bracket, who can learn the ropes in a low-risk way and provide a safety blanket if any of the front 3 leave unexpectedly.

On the flip side, there are a few players in the £100k-£140k bracket that'll be moved on soon to make some room wage-wise (Lallana, Lovren, Milner).

Liverpool have 3 players in the top 20 highest players in the PL

Salah 8th
Firmino 11th
VVD 13th

Mane is being criminally underpaid at £100k a week (agreed last year!) but there are talks of a further re-negotiation soon.
