Manchester City forward Bernardo Silva has been suspended for one first-team match and fined £50,000 for his tweet relating to team-mate Benjamin Mendy.

Silva compared Mendy to the character on a packet of Conguitos - a sweet brand available in Spain and Portugal.

The Portugal player, 25, must also complete a face-to-face education after admitting a breach of FA Rule E3.

Silva deleted the post 46 minutes after he published it before tweeting: "Can't even joke with a friend these days."

More to follow.

Silva very hard done by, mendy had no problem with the tweet, so that should be the end of it.

Putting it on Twitter did for him as it is then deemed public property - the perma-outraged are always ready to take up arms. Football clubs should actively encourage their players to stay off social media.

Reckon the FA purposely ducked handing out a suspension until the Liverpool game was done & dusted?

What does him having a dust up with a teammate have to do with his stance on racism?

100%. The Man City conspiracy theorists would go into overdrive if it happened last week. Look at their reaction to the Sterling thing “Gomez obviously wound him up” etc

As it happened, may have suited Liverpool. I'd say they'd more likely have preferred to take their chances with Bernard than David.
Both fine footballers but think latter may have been more influential in a high pressure game like last Sunday.
