Roy Keane is expected to be part of a 10,500 capacity crowd at Edgeley Park tonight when Munster play their opening Heineken Cup game against English league leaders Sale.
The Manchester United captain, who is recovering from a foot injury, spent an hour with the squad at their hotel in nearby Stockport last night.
His arrival caused a stir among the players, many of whom are ardent United fans, and Keane mixed freely with players and management alike.
“He chatted away with everyone and was very relaxed. The players were delighted to see him and there was a great buzz in the hotel,” a spokesman told The Evening Echo.
Keane has been to rugby games before, notably an Ireland-England Six Nations showdown a couple of years ago at Lansdowne Road.
Denis Irwin, the former United and Ireland international, was also spotted in the city yesterday.
Meanwhile, the heavy rain has travelled across the Irish Sea. Munster arrived in England yesterday afternoon to clear skies and bright sunshine.
Today, they awoke to the sounds of wind and rain blasting the windows of their hotel and the forecast is for more of the same by the 7.30pm kick-off.
Having trained in worse conditions during the week Munster should be well prepared for the elements as well as a stern challenge for last season’s European Challenge Cup winners.

Considering Keane's made a career and home in England, working with pampered clowns for half his life, and earning millions of pounds in the process, I doubt he could criticise a bunch of people who live in their home towns, represent their home province, and earn about the same in a year as he does in a week.
