They are obliged to unlock the phone, though there are ways for them to avoid it. For example, if it's a prepay phone that you are no longer using, then they can maintain they don't have sufficient proof of purchase or ownership to unlock the phone as it may not be yours, etc. I hate dealing with Three's customer service. Awful company that should go under pretty soon I reckon - the only way to make money in the phone market nowadays is with data and they give it away for free the fucking idiots!

As for the OP, you can't unlock it on contract, your best bet is to really just get a PAYG SIM for the time you're away. A week without your HTC won't kill you.

thanks im going to get a pay as u go sim, i rang customer care, i,ll definetly go over my monthly bill if i take my phone, data charges are something like 5 euro per mb. !
