Default What laptop should I buy?

I'm looking for one with about 1.6/1.8 GHz, at least 60GB of RAM, wireless-enabled and a CD and DVD writer.
I was under the impression that Dell were the best price-wise, but looking at them they don't seem all that great.
In fact, I was looking at Sony Vaios and they seem to be better value.

What do ye recommend?

Oh, and I tried the tech forum, but I was run out of the place by tumbleweeds.
They're quite prickly little feckers.

they said it's going to cost between $600-$1000

anyways, i got a dell inspiron 9300 in aus this time last year. a sony vaio with slilghtly lower spec was almost twice the price. look out for the deals in the paper for dell... every 6 weeks or so they do a 33% off. i got that, a free printer, memory stick and delivery, and a cheap deal on a 3 yr international insurance.

Ehhh, I meant to say 600.

I might look out for the Dell offers alright, but at the moment Sony is possibly slightly better value. Dell's so-called student special deals look like a bit of a joke really.
