Qustion about motherboards and CPU sockets

Guys,

Im looking at possiblr buying the following CPU at some point

I'm also looking at the followig motherboard

http://www.dabs.ie/products/intel-lg...42180000&src=3

My question is this the board I'm lloking at has the correct socket (LGA1156) for the CPU I've picked out. However the specs of the board state the following "Compatible Processors Quad-Core Xeon 3400 series". Does this mean it will only support Xeon procs are is it just saying the board will support them?

Thanks for the advice. I will be installing ESXi on the machine when its built which will only support the clarkdale family of Intel processors. Which is why I'm looking at LGA1156 boards.

I'm just trying to figure out will the board support any LGA1156 CPU or only Xeon CPU's.

ooops my bad - didn't spot that... go to intel.com and look the board up there. they usually have a link showing the cpu's that are compatible with the board....

I usually - seems they are putting it under related products now which is a shame - there old way was way better..

Eh, esxi will install on almost anything... Haven't come across a Mobo it doesn't install on. I have esxi lab running on a quad amd phenom

Not according to the HCL. To be honest I'm actually going to end up getting a low end Dell tower server. Its marginally more expensive than a self build but less hassle in the long run. I'm going to use openfiler as well for NFS storage.

Meh, the hcl is for big business not hackers. Esxi5 will install onto your laptop, course it's not on hcl, as it's not certified, doesn't mean it wont work, it's Linux. You'll get esxi 5 running on any decent desktop, the nice are the only thing you have to watch out for, lot more compatibility on esxi5 tho. Check out esx white box? I think.. I vie build loads and never ran into a issue.
