I going to try to install OSX alongside Windows and Linux on my laptop but I'm a bit confused about what's a base OS and what's an upgrade. If I buy Snow Leopard will it install or do I need a previous version installed before it would work? What's the base version I need to work from? I'd rather buy the software legally.
I have an iBoot DVD but I think it's fucking around with the MBR as after using it I can no longer boot into Windows or Linux.

i would have thought that 10.5 is the base for all the recent Universal Binary releases.
But i may be wrong there - so don't quote me on it!

also i don't think you have to go through the upgrade path to reach 10.6 or 10.7. indeed even if you had 10.5 and you wanted to move up to 10.6, it would mean a complete install of the new OS, rather than an upgrade.

so, the base system you need for 10.7 to upgrade would be 10.6.8. Do you run the whole thing on an Apple laptop?
One of the usual ways of running Windows and OS X together would be Boot Camp, you can either install it on an existing Windows system or on the OS X. But for some stupid reason it requires that there's only one partition when you do this on OS X.
The downside of this is that you can't choose to install Linux.

Another thing is to get Parallels (using this at work to run Windows programs) which is pretty nice, especially with the Coherence mode.

Well, either he's trying to do the same like gozzy and taking over the world, an universal machine is indeed not a bad idea.

But if you want to play around with the different systems or you need different tools or want to play the one or other game in between it's pretty neat.

Just to try it out, I've no intention of forking out for hardware that costs twice as much just because it has an apple badge on it.



So, if I buy the Snow Leopard DVD it will install the full OS? Another pain in the hole is that I don't have the Windows 7 installation disks and my product key sticker has faded,
so I'll have to see if there's a way to install it without wiping everything else.

EasyBCD can be used to restore your bootloader, and you can add an entry for Mac OSX. Simples.
