gearbox
A relation of mine has had problems with gearbox. Still able to drive car but it can let them down at any time. Garage willing to go half way with price. They were told unusual problem so I was wondering if anyone else has had problems.

VW gearboxes are made of cheese
and have dual mass flywheels which are even worse
the torque their turbo diesel engines produce can be too much for the drivetrain
as for the losing power issue from above, could well be a boost leak.
its more than likely to be running rich too, giving way less MPG

Find the leak and repair it.
Could just be a damaged/loose hose so might not be too expensive.
Oh and i know someone too who had to folk out big money to sort out the gearbox. Just went bang one day.
