Rahsers thrown out of new CSO basket

RTE:Thursday, 22 February 2007 12:23
The Central Statistics Office measures prices every month to determine the Consumer Price Index, which is a measure of inflation.
In the past it reviewed what items it priced every seven years. Now it is updating the list of items every five years. This is because the pace of life is changing so fast in Ireland and a review every five years gives a more accurate picture of prices.
The CSO said 36 new items had been introduced for January's figures, while 33 had been deleted.

The new items include the MP3 player, which replaces the Walkman. Other new items include yoghurt drinks, specialised teas, digital cameras, fresh or chilled indian or chinese meals, cereal breakfast bars and replica sports jerseys.
The items which have been deleted include streaky rahsers, cooking fat, girl's blouse, men's working boots, CD player, video recorder/player, audio and video cassettes and public telephones.
