Proper order too IMHO (though there will be controversy with the extra sets men play)

They shouldnt get the equal pay when they dont play 5 set matches. Add that to the fact that the tickets for Mens matches are more sought after than the Ladies equivalent.

Agreed on the last point...prize money should be determined on the crowd pulling factor, TV figures etc....although I would have thought that in Tennis, there would be little difference between the two ?
I used to love watching Gabriela Sabatini in her short skirts back on the 80's ....even the human sleeping pill that was Jim Sherwin on the commentary could'nt deter me :)

Its like anything you pay for the spectacle you see. For me and I'm not being sexist here as someone who used keenly follow tennis back in the Sampras, Agassi, Courier days I always found that they had the ability to create more excitement in one shot unlike the womens game which to me appears mundane despite the arguement of 'longer rallies'. quality not quantity as they say.
As for the looking of skirts then fair enough but should that be a reason they get equal pay?

Of course not
There are a lot of mens bassline players too though and the mens game sometimes doesn't offer as much in the lines of long rally's (Sp)
(Obviously cause its more of a power game though since the Williams sisters have come on the scene the Womens game has become more powerful too)
i'd be interested to see viewing figures and stuff
I do take your point though
At the top of the tree the mens game is more diverse

Crowd pulling power and TV figures / merchandise sales etc should be the determining criteria. It is in other sports.
It may not be totally fair in everyone's eyes but then that's sport for ya...and it throws up some glaring facts sometimes...like how John O'Shea earns more in 6 weeks than Brian O'Driscoll does in a year...and it only takes Rio Ferdinand 2 weeks to earn as much as Drico....fair??? of course not, but in terms of spending power...soccer appeals far more to the masses.
We are the fools who drive this, and as long as we keep buying into the mostly drivel-laden modern soccer world the more things will remain like so.

Severe case of 'hungry arse'.
Now women are getting equal pay it would help to justify it if they played in crotchless panties and tassles on their nipples, come on women tennis players, prove your worth.

I disagree with it simply because of the sets issue. They are on the court for a lot less time than the men. I find mens tennis a bit mundane these days since the likes of Sampras and Federer got a stranglehold on things but if I was a male tennis player then I wouldn't be too happy with it.
I would have no problem at all btw with equal pay if the women were made to play first to 3 like the men.

Your're right Stevie, I am so angered by the number of poseurs and freeloaders that inhabit modern football that I am almost unaware anymore of the cynicism that has crept into my thinking over the last decade, rather ironically, coinciding with the success of my beloved United (the late 90's anyway).
I suppose, as one who has passionately follwed the GAA, Soccer and rugby since the late 70's, the demise of the quality levels in football, compared with the rise and rise of rugby, in particular as a truly great game that makes me even more outraged at the current state of football.
I long for the return of the days when Robson, Platini, Brady and their like did their stuff but deeper than that, when it was a man's game, as it still is at lower levels of the game.
I honestly could not think of one top level current player that I could wish to back me up in a war type situation !!!!

Watching 2 of the greatest players ever (the 2 greatest IMO) is mudane? Ah come on.
I find the womens game is all together too predictable and very little imagination in it. It;s surprising but power seems to have taken over the womens game wit finesse & class the mens.
Heres the example for my theory. Martina Hingis never based her game on power & she's the one female tennis player i'd sit down & watch. Ok she's suffered with her ankle but she cant cope at the very top anymore with the power of the Williams' & Sharapova. Big change from 10 years ago when she won 3 slams.
Roger Federer meanwhile is unstoppable because his finesse seperates him from the power players like Roddick & Ancic.

You know what turned me off soccer? It wasn't the ludicrous salaries, it wasn't the hooliganism, and it wasn't the year-on-year shite performance of Man Utd in the Champions League during the 90s. It was the whining. Every time I look at a match on TV I seem to see players acting as though they've been shot or have tread on a landmine. In reality, they've probably only knocked their bootlaces off of an opposing player.
It fucking sickens me. That and the hounding of referees after every decision means that I tend to avoid football like the plague now unless it's a big CL game.
And the sad thing is that if somebody other than Sepp Blatter were in charge of FIFA the rules could be modified slightly to get rid of all the nonsense that's ruined the game.
Anyway, this was a tennis thread and I've probably dragged it too far off topic already.

I never minded McEnroe bitching to line judges or referees because of the context that he did it in. I would rarely have seen McEnroe play in anything other than Wimbledon and the image of this young abrasive American causing havoc in what was then the epitome of British propriety was brilliant. It also helped that McEnroe played some genuinely superb tennis.
In football though, bad behaviour now seems to be the norm. Watching Robbie Savage or Didier Drogba rolling around the pitch has none of the charm of McEnroe having a seizure on centre court.

another classic about mcEnroe were the old wooden rackets
Technology has arguably made tennis a poorer game, in much the same way as it has made golf a little less exciting too
No doubting Federer and Woods are legends though

Absolutely. Remember when Borg returned to tennis at the start of the 90s with his wooden racket? He was hammered by players way down the rankings with their modern rackets even though he hadn't lost any speed from his serve. He then went to the senior tour and played on with the wooden racket for six months, losing everything. When he finally picked up a modern racket he dominated the senior tour for two years.
Technology definitely removed a lot of skill from tennis (and golf) but Federer and Woods are on a different planet to everyone else, imo.

Hingis isn't the same player she was prior to her first retirement. Definitely not actually, although she has done quite well since coming back. Also, Justine Henin has arguably been the best women's tennis player in the world (5 grand slams and the Olympic Gold since 2003) over the last 3 or 4 years and she's small. She seems to handle the power just fine. I'm not saying that the power players don't have a huge advantage but if Federer can whip Roddick with ease then a talented small female player can definitely handle the power any other female can throw at her. -AmadeusDC-

People mention the number of sets when talking about prize money but imho that's irrelevant. If women had to play to 5 sets then a lot of the games would go on for frickin days!! What is much more relevant is how many tickets they sell and how big a television audience they draw. If the women genuinely bring in the same money as the men then absolutely pay them the same but I honestly don't believe that they do. Outside of the top couple of players the womens game definitely has less appeal than the mens. It is also generally acknowledged to be incredibly predictable until the latter rounds where as Federer and Nadal (on clay) aside the men's game is less so. Paying both sexes the same when the basic economics doesn't back it up is nonsense. -AmadeusDC-

exactly that should be the argument not how many sets they play, find womens tennis boring and predictable.
the only sport where i would argue that women should get paid more is beach volleyball, far more appealing imo.

Doubtful, especially when you think that Serena Williams demolished Sharapova over two sets in the Australian Open in 63 minutes. Most women's games actually aren't that long.

I agree with most of this. I think that, based solely on the economics, women don't deserve to be paid the same as the men in the slams. It's "equal pay for equal work" in a post-feminist world gone mad.

But the shit had hit the fan for Martina long before injury set in. She retired in '02 but has'nt won a slam since Oz in '99. Add that to her antics in that years French against Graf and she suffered big time. Serena beat her in the '99 US and thats when the power game took over.
Henin's strength is that her ground strokes are probably the best ever. That back hand is a powerful weapon too so what she loses in size she gains in raw technique.
