im assuming its the same principle but when you save something in illustrator and drop it into powerpoint there's usually a white background around the object. so how do i save something in illustrator without the white background?

You need to save as a gif to preserve transparency

ok and say your diagram is made up of different parts right? when you save it in illustrator then its usually one whole object and you cant edit it in powerpoint. but ive discovered that actually you can and im wondering how they did it, did they save each part individually and drop like 7 parts into powerpoint and recreate it or what?

and dont ask me to google it cos i dont know how.

You can copy and paste between the two easily, maybe thats how. There are options to export as seperate frames too but thats generally used when exporting to Flash. In your situation, if you only need to preserve the transparency of one, export as a gif and then just cope and paste the other parts.

see that just brings me back to square one. i dont know what im doing wrong. if i draw something, save it as gif i can get rid of the background for dropping into powerpoint. happy days.

if i draw something and just copy paste it directly from illustrator to powerpoint im back with the white background. ok obviously im just not getting it. this is really frustrating

When you are saving as a gif make sure you have transparency checked.

I just tested it myself, and it worked. You still have a white background, is that the prob?

i know its the way im trying to explain it, its not very clear but this is what im trying to do:

i would draw diagrams or models in Illustrator. i would usually save it as WMF or JPEG and drop it into powerpoint and work from there.

I ran into trouble this morning with the white background so i needed to know how to get rid of that - you suggested saving it as GIF. hey presto! done.

now here's my second query. when you draw a model in illustrator and save as a jpeg/gif/wmf whatever, its an actual object or picture you drop into powerpoint same way you drop in a clipart. you cant take them apart and edit them you can just add like text boxes or whatever around it. i discovered a file this morning from my predecessor and it was a model she drew in illustrator but had dropped into powerpoint in such a way that i coudl actually move all the various components around and re arrange them on the slide. im wondering was it the way she saved each individual part of the model separately and rearranged it herself again in powerpoint (which is madness and horribly timeconsuming i woulda thought) or what?

Gotcha. I dunno girl. I often Export to Flash and it exports everything as individual objects BUT into Flash, you just check Every Single Frame option or summit. Dunno would it be the same for Word. Maybe check your export options. When I run into huge trouble, I do everything in one program and export as a whole page if you get me. Like do you really need to go into Word at all? Drama-wise like...
