Anyone ever had to get one done?? If so, how much? Thinking of buying a car but it needs the tappets adjusted so wondering, factoring in repairs, would it be worth my while.

AFAIK its fairly cheap. Just a matter of tightening a few bolts more or less isnt it? Is it a Ford? Loudest tappets ever!

haynes manuals describe this in detail - could be done easily yourself if you have spanners, problem is to get it just right - too tight and the car won't start int he cold too loose and you are loosing power (and the knocking noise (doesn't do any damage though)) - the exact amount would be in workshop manuals and the like - try looking on books4cars.com for your type of car you are after

Yeah was thinking it couldn't be too complicated because we have tappet adjusters outside but wanted to ask around anyway. Buddies' father is a mechanic and he said pretty much the same thing, small job but has to be done right. So basically cost of an hours labour for a garage or mechanic.

yeah there are also some tricky bit in so far as the car needs to be up to temperature so you have to get the job done quickly before it starts cooling so if its your first time doing it you'd want to have someone around who has done it before.

I won't even chance doing it to be honest, I'll be paying a mechanic to do it right, just to be sure.
