Martin Culen was just on RTE radio1, going on about the need to secure an open skies agreement with the U.S. - so that flights from Shannon and Dublin can be increased. So I guess the deal is: Shannon gives up the mandatory stop over, in return Cork will never get an upgrade to launch transatlantic flights.

I don't think they could put the stoppers on an airline using Cork.

cork airport does't know what it wants to be. they don't know if trhey want to be a budget airport or a full service jobbie. the result is a huge building with no traffic.
and as for cullen. is there no end to his bungling? he has to be the greatest watse of space going.

Cullen will be gone as a minister in the next Government he is useless and only there to garner the Waherferd vote.

Whatever about U.S. flights which will happen I reckon any word about Cork being shafted with 160million debt ?Cork need to be debt free to develop.

Fianna Fail will get slaughtered in Cork at next election over transport,Airport debt issue,Sarsfield Road and Bandon road roundabouts,Kent Station re-development,Horgans Quay ongoing B.S.Macroom bypass,Rail lines to Midleton etc.No new city bus routes.

Maybe but they are being very quiet about debt issue and a massive surplus in the budget.Dublin & Shannon airports are their priority.Cork gets shafted in decentralisation also - second city in state without a government department.
A long way to the election next summer.

Cork Airport is a fucking hole.
I have never in my life come across a bigger bunch of complete idiots in my entire life. Not mind the rudeness of most the staff.

I know that has nothing to do with the thread really but really, they should all be shot.

Should get slaughtered, but won't.

I struggle to understand how people vote for them considering their long-standing neglect of Cork.

One of the problems is that the opposition don't seem to have any coherent proposals of their own.

The Green Party proposals were at least interesting, although they contained some flaws (which I pointed out to them in a hopefully constructive way).

Maybe it's time for some of us who care to put forward a programme for Cork and challenge the various political parties to support it.

And what exactly are Sinn Fein's policies on Cork?

They're so obsessed with the North, I can't remember them ever coming up with one. FFS their leader doesn't even sit in our parliament...

Like I just said, I'm impressed at the effort the Greens made. If you want to look beyond the establishment parties, they're a better bet and they have more chance of being in a coalition after the election.

Yeah.

Let's all vote for a minority party with less then 8% in the polls who will promise everything and then just prop up some bigger party when they get in.

Also most of their leaders (Gerry Adams, Martin McGuinness etc.) live in the UK. I don't want a party led by people living in the UK running our country.

Exactly.

Like the PDs or the Greens, or even Labour.

All talk when they are in opposition, but when they get in they just prop up the bigger parties.

Would FG be any better for Cork than FF?

I struggle to see that FG have any policies at the moment. They are great at telling you that things are wrong with the health service and the transport system, but in fairness any moron can see that. They are distinctly short of proposals for how to change things.

The best I can say for them at the moment is that they don't have FF's proven record of failure w.r.t. Cork.

FG ignored Cork last time they were in: no minister, no voice at the Cabinet table.

I think that may be why they got hammered in Cork subsequently.

Now all they have is Bernard Allen, the last FG minister from Cork was Peter Barry.

Anyway, my point is that a vote for FG would be the same as a vote for the greens or the labour party or the PDs or whoever FG would team up with in order to get their hands on power.

Fair enough. But haven't we established that FF have ignored and failed Cork in a myriad of ways? What is the alternative? Vote in the same shower again?

The way things are set up, it appears almost certain that FF and A.N.Other party will form the next government.

This all stems, in my opinion from the civil war, and could be solved if FF and FG either merged or at least coalesced.

This way, there would be a real choice.

Can the City and County Councils not come up with an intergrated transport plan?
All this talk of new lines, new stations - there's only been one new bus route in Cork in the last 20 years afaik - the orbtial - and how long did it take to get that sorted.

Major parts of the conurbation are classed as rpovincial bus services. WTF?

And is it right that all bus passes start on a Monday or something? That if you buy a weekly ticket on say a Wednesday, it only lasts til the Sunday and you have to pay full price.

The greater Cork population is what - 300,000? And you can't buy daily bus, train or intergrated tickets?

Mockery.

FFS.
