Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Barclays Player of the Month award for the second month in a row.
Following on from his November prize, the Manchester United winger has become only the third player to win consecutive awards.
The 21-year-old continued his fine form at the end of 2006 with six goals in seven games in December.
Ronaldo began the month with a goal in the 3-1 win over rivals Manchester City before he bagged a brace in the away victory at Aston Villa.
A further pair of goals followed in the wins over Wigan and Reading at Old Trafford.
The excellent goalscoring month has left Ronaldo just one goal back of Didier Drogba in the race for this season's Golden Boot.
It is the first time in almost 10 years that a player has won the player of the month award in succession.
"Ronaldo continued his fine form from November and said goodbye to 2006 in fantastic style," Barclays Awards Panel member Jim Hytner said.
"His pace, quick feet and eye for goal are proving to be a real handful for defences at the moment, as his return of seven goals from six games in December illustrates."

just dug this up
But that cosmopolitan feel gave way to a new philosophy: for almost its entire history, the club has fielded only players born or raised in the Basque country. What that means to the city is evident every time you go into a bar (which will be often) and see the team photo hanging proudly on the wall. The connection between club, players and fans is far closer than at almost any other club. Athletic have effectively become the unofficial Basque national team; the representatives not just of a city or a region, but a country, a people.
i can see why this would appeal to ETA

Of all the names you've mentioned there , only Drogba, RVP and Totti have any real grounding. Maybe Essien. The rest are just ridiculous. Nobody can seriously say that Ronaldo isn't one of the in form players in world football. He's by no means the best (or even close) footbaler in th world ...yet. I agree . But to be honest most of Barry's goals have been from the spot. But I see your point
I think the original quotes from Scholes are sensationalist to be honest. If Ronaldo is still playing at this level in two seaons time , then they'd hold more weight. But it's that British tabloid/Sky Sports mentality that seems to seep through to the public and now seemingly the players. They build someone into a sort of demigod based on a few good performances. In fairness they've done the same with Fabregas to an extent

Bilbao aren't the only well-supported club in the basque country, and their not the only one to employ a basques only or no-non basque Iberians rule.

Bilbao, are the biggest but not far behind are sociedad and Osasuna (which is also the Basque word for 'slainte'); and also there is a debate about whether osasuna are basque or navarran!
Osasuna are at the moment the best team (and it has non-basques); Athletic were lucky not to be relegated last season are hovering in the zone this season (spanish-basque policy only (they seem to hate the french-basques, especially when they then play for France LOL) and Sociedad are doing shit altogether (and there first team at the moment are all basque, but they have had non-spanish foreign players in the past)

Indeed, Sociedad eventually relaxed the rule and now sign non-Basque spaniards- sparingly. There's fierce rivalry between the many Basque sides in the top two tiers- I'd doubt a proud Basqe nationalist in San Sebastien would be happy to be informed that Bilbao was his national team, personally!
