The Premiership leaders have moved for the Swedish striker to add cover to an attack currently short on options.
Larsson's current club Helsingborgs confirmed at a press conference that they had accepted an offer from United for the player to move to Old Trafford until March 12.
The deal will go through when the transfer window reopens in January and allows Larsson to maintain his match sharpness ahead of the Swedish domestic season which starts in April.
The move will be Larsson's second foray into British football after he spent seven hugely successful years with Celtic.
During his time at Parkhead, the forward scored 242 goals in 315 appearances before leaving for Barcelona in 2004.
He won La Liga in both seasons at Camp Nou and played a key role in last term's UEFA Champions League final, coming on as a substitute with Barca trailing Arsenal 1-0.
Larsson's introduction turned the game in his side's favour, laying on the equaliser for Samuel Eto'o and then providing the winner for Juliano Belletti.
In the summer, he rejoined home-town club Helsingborgs and has now been temporarily allowed to return to a major European league.
