View Full Version : Celtic signed Keane 'to squeeze more out of Ireland'
Echoboy

bbc.co.uk: British football club Celtic has admitted that it signed Roy Keane in order to win fans in Ireland... just as it has signed Japanese and Polish players to extend its franchise elsewhere.
Speaking in Dubai about the club's global ambitions, club chief executive Peter Lawwell said the club's recent signing policy had been conducted with market growth in mind. "We've got (Shunsuke) Nakamura from Japan, we have brought in two Polish players - Maciej Zurawski and Artur Boruc - and last year we brought Roy Keane to Celtic in order to squeeze growth out of the market in Ireland."

Defend what though? Keane was signed to maximise sales in Ireland? I already alluded to that elsewhere. In the article Lawwell mentions "floating fans". That was his target audience. I fail to see how his admission negates years of links with Ireland though Echobhoy. I think you're a bit mixed up. How does signing Keane for market value negate any links with Ireland?
And when am I blowing about any Shamrock brotherhood? Find me a link Echobhoy!
Maybe the pipe piper will spill the besn for you. Slow down, you'll give yourself a heart attack. You're a part-timer on here Echobhoy - kind of apt isn't it.

You're a big fella. Could you give him a hand with the chip? Even if you helped him carry it. I'm sure he's a nice fella and all that, I don't doubt it for a second, but the obsession with Celtic is a bit over the top especially considering there are more United/Liverpool fans etc "raping" Cork City for support every week. City games don't clash with these games though so how Celtic or any other club can be seen as "competition" is beyond me.
In truth the real competition to Cork city or any other eircom league club is their own/the FAI's myopia. That's not something that should be thrown at Celtic's door.

SHOCK HORROR, Celtic sign an Irish player and take advantage of this by selling jersey's and other merchandise and make money.
Celtic is a business. In order to succeed you need money. Fairly simple really. Celtic wouldn't be the first club to do this. Real Madrid bought Beckham, just happend to go on an asian tour and made their money back in less than a week on jersey sales. Coincidence!?!

To get back to the topic;jeez lads, Celtic signed Roy Keane to strengthen their fan-base in Oireland and squeeze more money out of the 'ra-supporting, bigoted, pig-ignorant "Shelltik" fans that we all know.
You don't say?God that's a huge surprise altogether so it is.
When you have people who are thick enough to subscribe to Setanta Sports just so they can watch "Roy Keane's Celtic!" (as the radio blurb went) then they deserve to be made fools of.
Got what they deserved when he fucked off after only a year.

So you have to mention the word hate to show hatred then?
Those ignorant fools are what Lawwell alluded to when he mentioned "floating fans". Keane boosted the club's profile and more jerseys got sold in Ireland. I've looked long and hard and can't find a post of mine that's bigotted or in support of the IRA.
If Celtic haven't missed him how have they "got what they deserved?"
P.S. He fucked off after 6 months, not a year.

I have no doubt you are not bigoted or an IRA supporter. But the fact remains that some Celtic fans are. The signing of Keane would have pleased these people immensely.
What I meant when I said "they got what they deserved when he fucked off after a year" is that these fans were probably expecting that he would play out the remaining years of his career at Celtic (he was talking about finishing at the end of 2006-2007 and he joined them halfway through the 2005-2006 season I think).
His short stay at Parkhead would have disappointed them I am sure and the money they gleefully spent on Celtic shirts with his name on the back surely looks like a waste now. I'll bet they cancelled their subscriptions to Setanta when he retired as well.

You found a video of someone shouting at the Rangers players as they got off the bus and that's your criteria for labelling all Celtic fans scum?
I'm extremely interested in hearing your views on the City fans spitting on opposing players on more than one occasion last season. Actually scratch that, I'm not. Face it, it's not all sweetness & light down your way either now is it?

Celtic, unlike Hibs, didn't sell out on thier Irish roots. Look around the ground the next time they play. The main identity of the club is Irish. The point Lawell was making is that Celtic have reached saturation point in their markets, as a PLC they need to achieve growth hence signings like Keane and Nakamura. Now I'm not a fan of that approach as I would prefer that football was a sport-but Celtic has to compete in Europe and can't do so on the paltry TV money that is dwarfed by the money smaller clubs are getting. As for the contempt they have for the league in Scotland, that was born out of the contempt the Scottish league has for Celtic.

It all came to a head after Jim Farry "forgot" to register Cadete before a game against Rangers. It was investigated and he was sacked from the SFA. The SFA had an agenda against Celtic for a very long time. They also wanted the tricolour banned at CP.

This is what happens with your threads normally. You put up a thread, somewhere along the line you label all Celtic fans scum or other and then when someone points out that your own club has her own problems you bury your head in the sand. I’ve never said all Celtic fans are angels but all City fans aren’t either. What I would suggest though, for your own peace of mind, is to get over your hatred of all things Celtic. I don’t imagine you come in contact with too many Celtic fans in your normal day so don’t let it grind at you chief. It’ll turn you into a bitter old man.

Echoboy I have heard plenty of Pro-IRA chanting in the shed over the years.
And personally I have no problem with that. By the way between 60-80,000 Celtic fans travelled to Seville in 2003 and there was one arrest. Celtic is the only club to win fair play awards from UEFA and FIFA for its fans behaviour.
MON there is no need to attack CCFC to defend Celtic. I love both clubs, have seen arseholes among both supports but definitely they are the best groups of fans in their respective leagues.

1) The bus window getting put in happened years ago. Don't fret yourself over it. It was a supporters bus from Dublin that got panned in.
2) Where have i ever defended anyone's antics? As I''ve said before, there's morons supporting Celtic. It's not new and it's not unique to Celtic. As we're using the kids line though, I think you'll find most people causing trouble are the 16 year old Buckie drinking have a go heroes that tag along with every club. All I would suggest is that you look after your own house before criminalising anyone elsewhere.
3) Nit picking? Lawwell mentioning that Keane was used for marketing purposes in your terms is somehow denying the link that exists with Ireland. That is nit picking in anyone's book.
You make me laugh yourself Echoboy and I'd love if we could argue & debate issues with a bit of maturity but you have an ill informed opinion of Celtic fans which is something I will never agree with. You say that City are working hard with the Gardai yet if I was to tell you the Celtic board are working extremely hard at tackling sectarianism you'd tell me I'm dreaming. Seriously chief, show a little compensation. I'm not asking you to love Celtic now am I?

As we're using the kids line though, I think you'll find most people causing trouble are the 16 year old Buckie drinking have a go heroes that tag along with every club. All I would suggest is that you look after your own house before criminalising anyone elsewhere.
The general publics opinion of Celtic isn't 15 year old kids causing trouble. Sectarianism is a massive problem. I didnt criminalise Mon, i reffered to what the chairman said .... you dragged it down this route to be fair.
3) Nit picking? Lawwell mentioning that Keane was used for marketing purposes in your terms is somehow denying the link that exists with Ireland. That is nit picking in anyone's book.
I didn't suggest that at all ..... i had that opinion long before he said that. Him saying it just confirmed it. That club have IMO always treated their fans like rent-a-crowd but to actually come out and say it is a massive insult IMO
You make me laugh yourself Echoboy and I'd love if we could argue & debate issues with a bit of maturity
At least we can both laugh about it :p either that or cry !!
but you have an ill informed opinion of Celtic fans which is something I will never agree with.
I am going with public opinion and my brother lives in Scotland so whatever i hear from him. There is a roaring ongoing debate on the social problems caused by two Scottish clubs and both club manouver to avoid taking the flack.
You say that City are working hard with the Gardai yet if I was to tell you the Celtic board are working extremely hard at tackling sectarianism you'd tell me I'm dreaming.
I'd tell you dont believe everything you are told, read between the lines. Just cause the guy is selling you a big plastic shamrock, it doesn't make his opinion anymore valid.
Seriously chief, show a little compensation. I'm not asking you to love Celtic now am I?
Compensation ..... dont mention the war Mon, a foreign club afforded every single possible resource at the cost of the domestic league. DO NOT mention the war, you are doing well out of this argument man ... leave it be.
I dont have time to devote time to a prolonged debate.

There's no war Echoboy if only one side is fighting. I'm not having a go but that's the way it is. People don't skip City games because they're off to United, Liverpool or Celtic, they skip them because they're simply not interested.
Here's a few reasons why City aren't more popular:
1 - The product. It's a poor product working on its image but there's an old marketing adage that says the first on the market gets half the customers regardless of quality. It just so happens that the English leagues were given major exposure over here years ago and the Irish "product" wasn't strong enough to compete. There's a reason why Esat, Eircell etc now trade under different names. It's a simplified example but that's the way it goes. Ironically, if the CCFC marketing department were half as savvy as Lawwell things might have been a bit different.
2 - The catchment area. I can tell you without any prejudice that I never even knew City existed until I was around 12 or 13 and I only live 30 miles from the City. There are, or at least there was, ZERO exposure of CCFC outside the City when I was growing up. That's down to either inadequacy or funding, I don't know which, but it's the truth of the matter and I'm sure many on here will agree.
3 - Age. City formed in 1984. Some people will have supported Cork Hibs but again as with the catchment area the majority of people following City on from Cork Hibs will be in and around the City. For anyone over the age of 30, they were well on their way to supporting English clubs long before City arrived.
4 - Personal choice. I choose who I want to support as do many people in Ireland. I wear what clothes I like, eat what food I like etc etc and damned if I'll be told what team I should support.
The rest of your post is extremely ill-informed though I'm sure you think the same of my opinions so let's just agree to disagree. As for plastic shamrocks though, the only time I ever saw one was when Jacobs released them for Euro 88/Italia 90.

Swim away from what? Ask me a direct question and I'll give you a direct answer. You mention the "cost" to the eircom League. When I explain why such a cost exists you accuse me of taking it off on a tangent.
I've never turned a blind eye to anything but I am finding it kind of tough to gauge just exactly what it is you want from me.
