Ah ya, true enough. It's been a tough old season so far so you'll forgive me for taking a bit of satisfaction in tonight's results. I'd agree that in the grand scheme of things it's decidedly 4th best but it's still worth winning & is a useful competition to give a run-out to some of those on the fringes on the first team.

As i always maintain if you get to the semi's its worth taking a bit more seriously from then on-Southend are a game away from the semi's now
Players like Richardson and the likes though might regret it in the long run
They should still have won

Anyone know that aside from his time at Gillingham, Glenn Roeder's managerial career reads:
Watford
1st season - 7th
2nd season - relegated
West Ham
1st season - 7th
2nd season - relegated
Newcastle
1st season - 7th
2nd season - .................... .............

Well i'm in no position to talk after tonight but possible Managerial messiahs could be
1-Terry Venables
2-Bryan Robson
3-pick any other usual suspect of your choice
Possible new players
1-Beckham
2-Anelka

They have a crazy number of players out on loan though.
I think Foster, Rossi, Evans, Gibson, Pique, Simpson, maybe even Dong Fangzhou (yes, actually a decent player, I was shocked myself), there's the squad for next season.

Fair point
Gibson is the only one they really could have done with tonight, maybe Rossi too
I rate Evans and Pique highly but think they are okay at the back but its in midfield and upfront that the problems lie when the Scholesys and Giggs and Sahas are gone

Evans and Pique would both be an improvement on the fullbacks tonight. I think having seen Pique play defensive mid he'd have been an improvement there too.

My point on Savage & Bullard was that both are energetic. Hargreaves just happens to be energetic with a bigger club then them.
I honestly think the likes of Boro etc is his level. United should burst their balls to sign Scott Parker.

well, the performance of stand-ins against both Copenhagen and Southend has shown how tightly balanced things are in the United side.
..Some players do not have replacements. The Giggs, Carrick, Scholes line across the middle, the Rio and Neville to the back line, the guile of Saha and Solskjaer to the front, are all missed when not about.
however, there does seem to a major prioritisation of the premiership (amongst the fans as kolakubes has said) and amongst the players.
..Giggs and Neville look particularly demented for the league, but there also seems to be collective hunger for points from the team.
Hargreaves will have to be added, ..I'd rate him considerably higher than each of Bullard, Savage or Parker, better ability and better reader of the game, ..It would put United in a strong position.
Kuszczak was poor last night as well.

Ya, Liverpool met them two years in a row in the 3rd round ('57 & '58) losing the first year and beating them second time round at Roots Hall after a replay. As per last night's game there was only one division between them (although they ended up in similar league positions at the end of the year which won't happen this year judging on each team's progress so far).

Going by that logic Steve, there isn't a United player that would make the Southend side ;)
EDIT: For the record I'm not saying Savage or Bullard are as good as Hargreaves. I am saying though that he's just a step above them. He's all bustle which is what they do.
Parker is a superior player to him though in my eyes.

I'd love to know what Jose, Fergie, Wenger and all of these guys actually think of Parker-he sees like a good player to me but i don't know really, surely one of them would have bought him (or not sold him) by now
You could say the same about a younger Carrick i suppose
and needless to say Parker, has also to take some part of the blame for Newcastles league position (the United game was just one example), though injuries haven't helped

In my opinion Parker is the accomplished all-round player and Hargreaves has never come close to matching the level that Parker was performing at in the year prior to signing for Chelsea.
Hargreaves versatility is useful in tournament competition and in sides lacking squad depth. A side with United's resources shouldn't need him to jumping around from full-back to right-midfield to centre-midfield every week. He would be bought purely as a defensive midfielder imho and if that's the case then Parker is the better option.

Parker is a very good player, but there was no possibility that Chelsea would have sold him to United in the summer.
United would now have to double Newcastle's money to get him, which puts him at the same price as Hargreaves. ..and a quick resale is unlikely.
Parker likes to get forward too, and can add goals as well, ..he'd be a good addition but I'd prefer to land Hargreaves at this stage. Hargreaves looks to have matured nicely and better suited to what United need.
..but either player would be a good addition.

I honestly think that's the only reason he isn't at United right now. I think Chelsea, though leaving him go, also realised that they couldn't pass him on to someone who could contend for the title. Fortunately for them, Newcastle dived in.
On a totally unrelated point, I thought United should have broke the bank for Ballack.

Not sure how relevant that is as Ballack was available on a free. Sure you'd have to line his greedy german pockets with gold for his signing-on fee & wages but as you've got no initial capital expenditure for the Glazers to veto I reckon there was no financial reason why utd couldn't have landed him.
As it happens after years of courting him Fergie suddenly decided that he didn't need him as he played in the same position as Paul Scholes. Nothing to do with Ballack deciding to snub United for Chelsea though, Fergie just didn't actually realise what position he played in.

HE TRIED TO MAKE IT ONLY MATTERS IF ITS THE SEMI FINALS WHEN THEY GET BEATEN. FFS.
On a totally unrelated point, I thought United should have broke the bank for Ballack.
I'd have loved to have seen United land Ballack, ..but Ballack chose Chelsea based on likelihood of European challenges. United were snubbed, but based on last season in Europe you can understand his thinking.
however, Chelsea have just landed two players (Ballack and Sheva) who have just entered their 30's which could turn out to be negative moves in the long run, and a moves more greared towards the CL.
...both Hargreaves and Parker are in their mid-twenties.

I don't know about that. For some of United's key younger player it was their first meaningful trophy in senior football & it was the Oomoa Loompa's first as captain. Added to that it added gloss to a pretty poor season by United's lofty standards.
They do look a bit gutted in their celebrations though.

When I said we I was obviously talking about the United supporters, obviously the players are going to enjoy winning any trophy.
As for talking up small trophies, Liverpool cant talk (Charity Shield anyone).
Its not much of a calamity for United to exit the League cup early, Im certainly not shedding any tears but as per usual Liverpool supporters are more worried about United Losses than Liverpool wins..

Im certainly not shedding any tears but as per usual Liverpool supporters are more worried about United Losses than Liverpool wins..
That's such a mindless statement. I make it my business to attend/see every Liverpool game possible, if I see a United game it's either 'cos it's against another top side or I've got f*ck all else to do at the time.
While I freely admit that I wouldn't want to see united win a raffle, to say any true Liverpool supporter is more concerned about how United are getting on is very wide of the mark.
And nowhere did I make out that this is a huge calamity for United. It's clearly a distant 4th priority for all top clubs. What I did say though is that the manager fielded a team more than capable of winning but they severely under-performed for the 2nd League Cup game in a row. You can guarantee that a few harsh words were said after last night's game & not because of the implications that result had for their success in the competition.
