A mixture of both I reckon. If we could handle them the first day there's no reason we couldn't handle them the second day. They upped the dirt on the second day alright but they were bigger and fitter than us.

But at the end of the day it all comes down to amateur v professional in my book. Of course Ireland have won the series in the past but nowadays setups are far more professional than they used be so no surprise that these guys can be big, fit and strong when they're being well paid to be that way.

Look at the shinty beforehand. No offence to any of them taking part but it was the worst of what Ireland has to offer vs the best of Scotland. I've no doubt that Ireland's best side would annihilate the Scots. Same is going on for the Internatinal Rules. The best of Australia are going to continue to dominate while their players are being paid to train.

Also, outside the ball being different, not much else is different for them and a round ball for them to get used to would be far easier than the Irish lads trying to get used to the oval ball. You could see it the other day that when the Irish lads were dragged to the ground, some of them hesitated when getting up as though they were waiting for a free. The game is far too similar to the Aussie game.

Remove the outer goalposts I say.

Yes. They were shit. I gave reasons why they were shit. You say excuses, I say reasons why they were shit.

Yeah but we were found lacking in the fitness department out there a few years ago and since then the sides sent out there have been sent out to keep with them fitness wise rather than strength wise. Again, the reason we were shit* is because the guys are amateur and can't devote their waking lives to pumping iron and being fit. Jack O' Shea would have put up the fight to them but the Aussies in his time certainly weren't on a fitness level in comparison to today's Aussies. Colm O' Rourke would have put it up to them too but it's no good having 3 or 4 guys who can do it. You need 15-20 guys who are, to a man, as fit and strong as the Aussies.

The most worrying thing from my point of view, was not the fights, that had so many grannies disgusted on liveline yesterday, it was that the Aussies were far better at the basic skill of kicking OUR round ball. The emphasis on handpassing in the modern game is to blame for this

glad to see MON that you understand it. steven mcdonnell is twice the player rourke was and easily as tough but the aussies are just too strong.

jarlath burns made a point and i agree with him that the irish tactics were also wrong, they should not be taking marks, they were playing the aussies at their own game and could never win like that. they should have kept the ball moving at all times

Like I said, it's all well and good for 3 or 4 players to be like that but you need 15-20 like they have.

Setanta O' Hailpin now weighs 16 stone, of pure muscle. If he was still hurling here he'd weigh 14 MAX. I'm not making excuses, I'm pointing out blatant differences between being an amateur and a pro. Galvin is no hulk but he's tough as nails and dirty with it but again you need a whole team to be able for it and we weren't. Like I said, 4 or 5 years ago we got creamed out there and since then coaches have chosen fitter sides to face the Aussies rather than stronger fellas. It's starting to show now though the difference in conditioning.

Shocking display, and all the talk about how ''rough'' the Ozzies were is just deflecting away from the nfact that the team, tactics, and management were useless on the day... in the 3rd quarter there were three balls kicked in to the oz keeper's hands on the trot, and that alone shows how bad the standard of Gaelic Football has become, teams try and walk the ball into the 21 & kick it over from there, very few Inter county teams have 5/6 forwards who can point from the 45 and further out, as the majority of teams are using this blanket defence/running game thesedays...
I hate to say it but Pat Spillane had a point when he called Tyrones style Puke football...

After seeing the third one drop short I started to think about the long drive home. Terrible.

If theres anything positive to be taken from this debacle its that maybe now there is a realisation that changes need to be made to the rules of Gaelic football.
As paddywagon said most teams nowadays like to handpass away into the 21 and then tip it over the bar. The kicking aspect has been diluted hugely in the last few years and not only is it damaging to the game its boring as batshit to watch.
As far as Ireland becoming more competitive if the games continue they need to get there head around the tackle. The Ozzies creamed them time and time again. The difference in the tackle is much harder for the Irish to deal with than the changing of the ball for the ozzies.
