i wish to fuck the GAA and RTE would get over being amazed by croke park. fair enough its big and well constructed. but thats what you expect when you pay a few million to a builder. they were at it again yesterday. marvelling at the size of it and how impressive it is. its not so impressive that all other stadia pale into comparrisson. all it has is size. and as for this bullshit that "there cannont be a bigger crowd at a sporting event this weekend." cock. the TV cameras showed huge patches of the stand that were empty. im sure it was a sellout allright but some people obviously couldnt be arsed to attend this makey uppy game. plus they reckoned without the crowd at twickenham.

I think I read somewhere that if they put in some temporary seating for the Ireland France game they could break the world record attendance at a rugby game.

surely that would reduce the capacity?

You would think they would want to show off this stadium to the world by the way they keep on going on about it, but no, when they get an excellent chance to do it they get fussy.

But isn't the hill being closed to punters during the rugby internationals because it's terraced?

There's a row of houses behind the hill that the GAA would have to demolish if they wanted to make it like the rest of the stadium. If they weren't the stupid mucksavages that they are, they would have realised it would have made more sense to actually move the pitch fifty yards towards the train tracks to give themselves the extra room needed to make it an all seater.

I agree, a horse-shoe stadium, it's the laughing stock of Europe, you have plenty of Polish lads here now who are prepared to do some work, finish the thing...

not to mention the train track directly behind the hill. Its a great terrace to watch a match from though

Everything has a price except for Doob sentimentality it appears. Place should have been wonderful. It's 3/4 of Europe's finest stadium. At the moment it looks like it's waiting to be finished. I hope it gets finished in my lifetime.

I know yeah, bloody amatuer organisation! Imagine the cheek of them, having the foresight to plan ahead in the late 80's and go about building a world class stadium.
Thats the kind of thing proper, professional bodies would do...

The record attendance for a Rugby game is well over the 100,000 as Aus played the All Blacks in Sydney before the 2000 Olympics It may not be the record but 70000 80000 wouldn't break it. For modern stadia Croke Park is one of the more ugly ones alright but thats down to a lot of things cost, lack of space etc.I hate stadia where the outside looks like the inside inside-out. Still the best looking thing in that dump in North Dublin any way.
Anyway no one does stadia better than the yanks. Some of the new stadiums are Jaw dropping. Houston Seattle and Cardinals stadium in Arizona spring to mind.

The new Reliant Football and the Minute Maid Baseball stadium & the Toyota Basketball centre which holds 24,000 indoors in Houston are fantastic and they still have the Astrodome.
The new Landsdown Road will only hold 50,000 spectators while the Millenium Stadium Cardiff can hold 75,000 and a retractable roof.
retractable roofs are ghey

The Emirates is pretty jaw dropping. Stade de France, the Olympiastadion in Berlin and the Alllianz Arena in Munich aren't bad either.
Wembley? (Assuming it ever gets finished.)

Wembley should be ready soon for an England Under 21 international before any "big" games are staged there.
Stade De France is OK but there is too much of a gap between pitch and seating and its in a seedy part of Paris. The Emirates looks great except for the team !
Tha Allianz Arena is amazing allright.

Agreed. They also realise that there's more to a stadium than the no. of seats.
The new Cowboys Stadium thats due to open in 2008 I think , looks geuinely jaw dropping.
As proud as I am that we have 3/4 of a top class stadium here, it still doesn't compare to to numerous stadia in practically every major city in the U.S
I agree with the original post in this thread. We have to stop talking up Croke Park. . It's not that good.

Isn't the Cardinals one just a direct copy of one of the World Cup stadiums used for Germany 06? That said, the Yanks do make some amazing grounds alright. I've been to the Ravens and Panthers stadiums and seen the Bengals one. All are amazing!! Sometimes you wonder though if they were built to look good or to be a good sporting venue. Croke Park does look unfinished but is still a great stadium to watch a game. -AmadeusDC-

croke park is a great stadium and all but could have been so much better if they used the other design but then the money passed around to the boys and all that
