Llanelli kept up their early Magners League title challenge with a bonus-point victory over Munster at Stradey Park. The wings Dafydd James and Darren Daniel, prop Deacon Manu and full-back Barry Davies all crossed for tries as two virtual second-string sides battled out a poor contest.
The Scarlets used a slight advantage in the line-out to eke out a 10-9 half-time lead. But it was only in the final minutes that the Scarlets got away. In what was a dour affair, Daniel capped victory with a 50-metre dash down the right touchline to give the Scarlets their third try. A bonus point was assured with an injury-time try for Davies.

Worcester's coach Anthony Eddy issued a rallying cry after the Warriors slipped five points adrift in the Guinness Premiership basement with their sixth successive league defeat. Harlequins' victory over Northampton left Worcester marooned, with just two losing bonus points collected after Leicester condemned them to a 40-21 reversal at Welford Road on Saturday.
Worcester, promoted to the Premiership in 2004, are favourites for relegation, but Eddy said: "We are not a team that loses heart or faith. It was a disappointing day at Leicester but there is a long, long way to go in the season."

Leicester, despite the loss of five forwards to England duty, ran in six tries as they moved level on points with fourth-placed Wasps and seven clear of London Irish in fifth.

"We keep talking about the depth of this club and this is the time of the season that shows it," said the Tigers' head coach Pat Howard after his team's 29th home league game unbeaten.

"Leo Cullen has stepped into the captain's role and dealt with it well, and other players have stood up to be counted."

Bath's acting head coach Steve Meehan felt his players gave their all in Saturday's 21-17 defeat at home to London Irish in the Guinness Premiership.

"The guys are absolutely shattered," he said. "They put their hearts and souls into it and have done everything they were criticised for not doing last week. That's a positive, that they really put the effort in - I can't think that the supporters will be unhappy about that aspect." Two late tries ended their five-match losing run, with Irish snatching victory despite having three players sin-binned.

The first half was poor fare for a full house of 10,600, punctuated by penalties conceded at the rate of one every two minutes. Sadly the only time the players stirred themselves into action was when a mass brawl broke out in the 17th minute. The blue touch paper was lit by a spear tackle by David Paice on the Bath No8 Zak Feau'nati. The Irish hooker was fortunate to escape with a yellow card and was joined in the sin-bin by his team-mate Neal Hatley and Bath's Peter Short for their part in the fighting.

ROG: "It's a convenient excuse, isn't it? They like to think Munster are taking it easy in-between European matches. It's a lot of rubbish."

I'm suprised the international player were told to take this match off. It was a poor loss, the pack were totally dominated.

Tomas O'Leary's service was terrible at times, all over the gaff. Dunno if that was due to the untidy ball the pack served up (slowly). Made Manning's day a lot harder, although he was guilty of a lot of aimless kicking too. Frequently he was receiving the ball behind him and over his head, which made running a decent line basically impossible.

That waster Chris Wyatt should be booted all the way back to the airport - he has been one useless sack of shit since he joined Munster - no tackles, no ball carrying - no contribution whatsoever from the Welsh freeloader.

You cant win matches at this level with only 14 players interested in what they are doing.

Form dip sends Kidney looking at Academy options

By Tony Leen
MUNSTER’s Development squad jetted out on a four-day camp to Biarritz last night keenly aware that the province’s unexpected Magners League crisis has propelled them into the spotlight.

The squad, led by Academy boss Hamish Adams and Development officer Ian Costello, will play matches tonight against Spanish outfit Ordizia and on Thursday against a Spanish and French Basque Barbarians XV. The trip was planned in advance but the province’s lack of squad depth in key positions will give the development squad players a target for next season.

European success is what Munster are now judged on, but the Magners League table made for miserable reading for coach Declan Kidney, who is travelling to the French-Spanish border for Thursday’s game.

The Heineken Cup champions are languishing just one place above cellar-dwellers Border Reivers and already 20 points behind leaders Ulster after seven games.

After the four-try defeat in Wales, Munster manager Jerry Holland — whose son Billy is in the travelling party — admitted the title was beyond Munster’s reach.

“You can never say never, but it certainly seems that winning the league is beyond us now given our position. We still have a game in hand over some teams, including Ulster, but we needed to get a point out of this game against Llanelli and we failed to do that. Right now we can’t worry about the title, we need to worry about getting off the bottom of the table.”

At this rate, Munster’s domestic season appears all but over before Christmas. The Heineken Cup is not only the most important competition for their season, it is now the only trophy they can win. What will irk Kidney and the rest of the Munster squad just as much is that they are also 12 points behind arch-rivals Leinster.

It would have been a point less had they held firm in the closing stages against Llanelli instead of conceding two late tries to miss out on a losing bonus point. Yet Holland admitted all four points were there for the taking as they trailed just 15-12 with five minutes remaining.

“I don’t think the difference between the teams was our finishing ability, it was more that we seemed to lack the belief in ourselves that we could come to somewhere like Stradey Park and get a victory. We’re obviously very disappointed because there were just three points in it with 75 minutes on the clock and we felt we could win the game. At that stage it was fairly important to at least get one point given our position in the league.”

Jeremy Manning scored all Munster’s points with the boot but failed to ignite the attack that included Kiwi centre Lifeimi Mafi making his first start as the Welsh ran in four unanswered tries.

Holland said: “You don’t necessarily need to score tries to win games but theirs came about because of our mistakes.”

One bit of good news for Munster: they could have Christian Cullen and Anthony Horgan back in contention for their next Magners League clash with the Ospreys later this month.

Development squad for France: F Roche, E McGovern, S Cronin, M Essex, T Buckley, D Ryan, E Mackey, M Melbourne, R Noonan, A Kavanagh, B O’Mahony, B Holland, D Sherry, G Hurley, P Rowley, E Ryan, E Hickey, I Hanley, M Lawlor, C Doyle, T Gleeson, M Butler, K Earls, D Hurley.

Good to see Mossie back and also good to see some of the fringe players gettting a few games together
