I'm heading to Prague next month and I'm looking for info on hotels, pubs, things to do but especially hotels as we're trying to book that now and don't want to end up miles from town. Anybody been there before?

Prague is cool. If you're near the island in the river (think it's the Campo) check out the Kafka museum nearby.

I recall staying in a hotel about 2 stops via underground from the city centre, up a steep hill, sorry I can't be more helpful.

Who is the girl at the end of the Frank and Walters video? The one in the house with the necklace? She looks familiar, is she famous?

Does it have to be a hotel?

www.warsawshotel.com/ - Old Town Apartments
www.apartmentsapart. com
www.homelidays.com

are all good for apartments.

Try to get somewhere in Praha 1 cos its the centre. As for places to go, theres a club on Charles Bridge called Karlovary Lazne, i think, and theres 5 floors, cheap beer, hot women etc so thats good. If you want to go to an irish bar, there's loads! Rocky o Reilly's on Stepanska of Wencelas Square is ok but overpriced. There a nice Mexican restaurant called Banditos about a 10 min walk from Wencelas Sq on Melounova in Praha 2. I could be here all day.... Nice food, Nice beer, nice women. Great place!

Beware of Taxi's.
Got charged 30 Euro.
Ask them how much it will cost and don't argue with them.
This will get you thrown out of the Cab.
The bastard.

Thanks for the info. The old town apartments as mentioned by horselanger and bob look good. Usually stay in hotels but I like the idea of an apartment.

Beware of Taxi's.
Gillabbeygowl, getting overcharged by taxis is a regular thing in foreign countries, maybe here too. We politely asked our taxi driver in Warsaw last year how much our trip would be as we were wary of this. He wouldn't tell us and eventually pretty much said shag off in Polish and looked for somebody else to pick up. Trying to avoid the chancers is part of the fun of travelling. Another shifty looking guy followed us into a near-empty restaurant, started smoking at the table beside us while we were eating (it's been a while since you could do this in Ireland) and eventually tried talking to us. Maybe he was just a sociable kinda guy but his beady eyes said otherwise. We replied as Gaeilge which pissed him off no end.

Actin the sham: thanks for the compliment. Always appreciated!

Doppellanger: no idea who that girl is at the end of the Franks vid.

the hotel I stayed in was on a street called vinohradska and it was just 5 minutes on the subway from the museum. On reflection, it wasn't a great hotel, but it was very near to the city centre.

I saw a sign behind the bar in an Irish pub saying if you want a cab, ask them to call one, don't just get into one outside the bar.

They have their own currency and there are a lot of small booths where they will take your euros and give you krowns or whatever they have but they're not really good value, you're better off going to a bank.

Yeah, did the same about 6 years ago. Rented an old style 2 bed apartment on Jetna Street (I think) which is just around the corner from Wenceslas Square. There were two of us there and it only cost the equivalent of IR£11 between the two of us per night - £5.50 each, like. Naaaaawthing! And definitely stay away from the Irish bars - what's the point like? If you're into your shoes, this is the place for you. The food over there is terrific - try the carp. I'd recommend you go to a restaurant called U Cesky (sp?). Scrumptious stuff! All local cuisine and it's (was) fairly reasonable. £10 for a three course meal, bottle of wine and 4 pints Budvar...And that was for two people. Of course, you'll be paying more now but still...Oh, and don't forget to do the Absinthe ritual.

I`ve been there 3 times, each time on stag, stayed in aprtments close to the city centre twice and a place called hotel city centre the last time. I`d avoid staying too close to Wenceslas Square, its after getting quite annoying around there at night.

Just a few things i`d say to ya:

1: Its a totally Jekyl and Hyde city - by day you could bring your gran around with ya, by night, the freaks come out, big time. It can be a little dodgy so be on your gaurd.

2: Taxi`s - I have never in my life come accross so many of these thieving cunts in the one place in all my life. Once they hear your accent most of these guys WILL try to rip you off. Ask them how much it will cost to get to your destination before you get in, if they wont tell you, dont get in, these guys are a bunch of severe cunts. We got picked from the airport and dropped to our apartments as part of the deal on one trip and our driver went nuts when we told him what some of the cab drivers were trying to charge. He was a genuine guy and hated the fact that guys like this were giving the place a bad name. He said to ask these guys for their operating numbers and they wouldnt long be changing their attitude.

Absinthe - If you do venture, make sure you do so in moderation. I have been lucky to escape serious beatings over there as a result of going nuts on this shit (its the craziest drink under the sun).

Pubs - Stay away from the main square, by going down the side streets even 2 minutes away the prices are halved.

Clubs - the one with the 5 floors that was already mentioned is a good spot, also check out "Roxy" and "Mecca".

Strip Clubs - The doorstaff over here dont fuck around, so again, be on your best behavior!

I was there in 2001 and 2002. sounds like it's changed a hell of a lot recently and become something of an amsterdam of the east for lager loutish.

Not that there's anything wrong with this, i just prefer less of my own kind!

Try to eat in the local restaurants - if it's packed with locals then it's a winner. something which can be seen the world over. don't buy hash on the streets, it'll be licqourice - oh how i laughed when my mate tried to burn it up!

drink absinthe. do it as the locals show you. do remember to blow out the spoon of sugar before you put it back in the glass and create you own mini table-bonfire.

Was in Prague last year for my brothers stag. Unbelievable place for a stag, most bars are strip clubs and all strip clubs are brothels. Best one there was a place called empire, really classy chicks, and showers in all the upstairs rooms, if you know what i mean. Be careful of hookers on streets. as well as the hookers there's narcotics wholesale for sale on the streete, and thats in the middle of the afternoon. Stay well clear of these people as trouble will follow one way or the other!

Sounds decent, dying to get out there. Heard the hookers are awsome, just back from the dam, rode about 15 of them.

Its not like that, I have a enormous sexual appetite. I can't satisfy myself in this country. I don't see anything wrong with it. Anyway, €50 is the going rate.

To save yourself some money re cabs. Inside the terminal is a kiosk where you can buy a travel card. A few months ago a weekly one cost around 240crown. It entitles you to use all trams and metros - not train, some buses.

We stayed out in Praha 10 - it's a lot cheaper 'out there' but easy and quick to get to.

www.arco-guesthouse.cz (http://www.arco-guesthouse.cz)

It's gay/mixed, but it's actually a series of flats, not a hotel.

Can't really say about the whores though.

Food everywhere seems reasonably priced, but the closer to the Municipal Hall you get, the dearer stuff gets.

I did find that food we like hot - Thai, Indian, Sri Lankan - tends to be mild there.

We ate out nearly every night, was costing about £5-8 a head - that was with about 2 drinks each

Zizhkov is where the metal bar was iirc.

You have to go up the TV tower - view is amazing.

The communist museum is really small, but you really have to visit it - it's by the Mcds off Wenceslas Sq

Haven't been to the Dam yet, off there in May for a stag. The hookers in Prague, in the strip clubs, are built for one thing. Lap dances are hands on, nipples in your mouth and hands everywhere, well worth the 20 euro you'll pay

Only use the AAA taxis, they are honest, short distance should cost 100kc to 150kc. That a fiver, the most.A taxi from the airport is a standard 400kc. Get a bus outside the airport to Dejvice, where the metro is for 20kc. Thats less than a euro. Use the same ticket on the metro, it is valid. Make sure you punch your ticket on the trams and in the metro. The fine is now 500kc. Carefull of the ladies of the night. They are Russian controlled and certainly not czech women. The girls who will come over to you on Vaclavske nam are not hookers, they are pick pockets. The tram 22 and 23 which goes to the castle is known locally as the pick pocket express. If you eat and drink in the old town square or Mala Strana it is expensive. Just walk two or three minuits away for much better value. Accommodation is expensive in Praha. Have fun. I love this city.

I stayed at this place (http://www.dumuvelkeboty.cz/index.html) when I was over a couple of years ago. It's in the Mala Strana district and a five minute walk from the Charles Bridge and the Castle.
Quaint, spotless and friendly staff and within walking distance of most things.
I don't know what your budget is as the rates work out at about €50 pps per night.

prague is lovely

went there in 2005

stayed at Hotel William , which is about 5 minutes from charles bridge
address Hellichova 5 | Prague 1, Mala Strana, Prague 110 00, Czech Republic
It was dear, but we were upgraded from a rotten hotel that to our luck was over booked and we were moved here. Run a search on Google for it
sometimes booking thru an agents works out alot dearer than doing it yourself on the internet
Could'nt have complained no need of taxis , Subway down the road , if u want to play safe , a Pub downstairs that had pints for 15 cents
Irish bars then charged about 80 cents for the heineken but if u chose the Local brew its a way cheaper and stronger
